Fabrizio Romano confirms talks are underway over potential exit of Liverpool midfielder

Fabrizio Romano has reported that talks are underway over the potential exit of one player from Liverpool in the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

Shortly after the 2022 World Cup, Stefan Bajcetic broke into the Reds’ first team as an 18-year-old and immediately looked at home in our midfield, giving a particuarly brilliant performance in a derby win in the early weeks of 2023.

A month on from this year’s World Cup, the Spaniard’s career has sadly lost all of that momentum, with persistent injury problems resulting in him having not kicked a matchday ball since the tail end of the 2024/25 season.

Romano: Getafe ‘open talks’ to sign Bajcetic

The 21-year-old has recently resumed training with his teammates and flew out with the squad for the pre-season tour to the U.S., but he didn’t feature in any of Liverpool’s matches during pre-season, being deprived of that window of opportunity to impress Andoni Iraola.

On Monday morning, Romano took to X to report that Getafe have ‘opened talks to sign’ the Reds midfielder, with a ‘formula being discussed’ over a potential return to his homeland. It wasn’t specified whether the LaLiga outfit intend to sign him on loan or outright.

Will Bajcetic leave Liverpool in the next fortnight?

While Bajcetic will have been glad to simply get back training with his teammates after so many months of injury hell, he may also feel a sense of regret that his recovery didn’t happen quickly enough for him to get time on the pitch during pre-season.

His misfortune, allied with the brilliant form of Trey Nyoni, has seen him tumble well down the midfield pecking order at Liverpool, and not even the potential sale of Curtis Jones to Inter Milan could see the 21-year-old leap back into Iraola’s thoughts.

Without knowing any further details of Getafe’s plans for the Spaniard (loan/permanent move, value of prospective offer, etc.), it’s difficult to evaluate whether or not it’d be advisable for the Reds to sanction an exit for him.

On a personal level, though, Bajcetic might well be tempted to join the LaLiga side if they can convince him of greater prospects of regular game-time there than he’d get at Anfield.

We’d quite happily see the youngster remain at Liverpool as backup who could yet be needed throughout another busy season, but let’s see if anything further comes from Los Azulones’ reported interest in a player who Jurgen Klopp once dubbed ‘a pure joy to work with’ (BBC Sport).
