Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Unleashes Fiery 10-Word Reaction As WNBA Makes No Progress on Trans Athlete Rules

The WNBA has been swirling in a pool of controversy in recent weeks as talks on transgender athletes continue heating up. After Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham spoke out about her firm stance, opinions are quickly rising to the surface.

Now, Florida’s 46th governor, Ron DeSantis, representing the Republican Party, is weighing in on the matter.

Ron DeSantis Sends Strong Message on WNBA’s Transgender Athlete Controversy

On Thursday, DeSantis took to X to express his frustrations with the WNBA’s lack of progress on eligibility rules.

DeSantis reposted ESPN’s article and stated, “Women’s sports league cannot define what a woman is. SMH.”

His comment comes after ESPN’s Katie Barnes reported the league’s Wednesday statement: “Today’s meeting covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes and the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online. We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months. We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league. There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”

At the time of this writing, the WNBA has yet to come to a resolution on the subject; however, controversy looms as the league awaits answers.

To date, there haven’t been any players competing in the WNBA who have publicly identified as transgender.

The topic has been circulating in sports leagues for quite some time, but it picked up steam after Cunningham stated she aims to “protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

The 29-year-old Fever guard has raised eyebrows across women’s basketball, with some standing with her and others against her.

At this point in the season, she is averaging 9.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. She is shooting 48.3% from the floor.

Indiana is currently fourth in the WNBA, riding an overall record of 21-12. While they lead the Eastern Conference, the Fever have not been strong enough to edge out the Las Vegas Aces (23-11), the Golden State Valkyries (24-9), or the Minnesota Lynx (28-7).

While each franchise navigates the remainder of their schedules, controversy regarding transgender athlete eligibility will continue to loom until a firm decision is made. In the meantime, teams are left to battle it out on the court in hopes of reaching postseason contention.
