Ravichandran Ashwin, captain of Dublin Guardians in the inaugural European T20 Premier League, has emphasised the importance of competitive balance in cricket's growth as a global sport. The league runs from August 26 to September 20, 2026, across venues in the Netherlands and Ireland, marking a significant step in cricket's international expansion.

Ashwin's remarks come in the context of Ireland's recent series victory over India, a result that underscores the shifting competitive landscape in international cricket. The Dublin Guardians, backed by Rahul Dravid's consortium, will begin their campaign on August 27 against Belfast Wolves in the new tournament.

"Two things made me very happy. One was that a team ranked 10th could beat a team ranked first. I think the sport should be like that. It is also a lesson that the FIFA World Cup has taught us. For this game to become a truly global sport, with more nations coming to the fore and with cricket set to feature in the Olympics in the next couple of years, I see it as a huge positive," Ashwin said to ETPL.

"The second aspect is that if there is something in the pitch and there is a balance between bat and ball, bowlers are going to come into play, which Ireland proved beyond any doubt. To have a left-arm spinner like Humphreys bowl to Shivam Dube and get him caught at square leg is a lesson for people who ask me what has happened to the art of finger spin. The pitches have reached a point where any bowler can go the distance on a given day. I think you need a lot of luck to survive, apart from having plenty of plans in place in modern T20 cricket. So, it was a refreshing pitch to watch, and it was even more refreshing to see Humphreys being trusted with the 18th or 19th over against a left-hander. The pitch had enough in it and did not allow the left-hander to hit through the line. So, on both counts, it was very, very pleasing to watch," he added.

Why competitive balance matters for cricket's growth

Ashwin's perspective reflects a broader vision for cricket's development. The European T20 Premier League itself represents an ambitious attempt to establish the sport in new markets. The tournament features teams owned by prominent cricket figures, including Rotterdam Dockers, which counts Jonty Rhodes, Faf du Plessis and Heinrich Klaasen among its owners, and Amsterdam Flames, backed by Steve Waugh and Jamie Dwyer. The opening match of the tournament will be contested between Rotterdam Dockers and Amsterdam Flames at Voorburg Cricket Club in The Hague.

The inclusion of cricket in the Olympic Games in the coming years adds another dimension to Ashwin's argument about the sport's global trajectory. With established cricket nations competing alongside emerging teams, the competitive structure of tournaments like the European T20 Premier League becomes crucial to demonstrating that success is not confined to traditional powerhouses. Ashwin's emphasis on pitch conditions that favour both batting and bowling also speaks to the need for balanced competition that keeps matches unpredictable and engaging.
