David Warsofsky’s first NHL game came against the Buffalo Sabres. Nearly 13 years later, the former Boston Bruins defenseman is joining them.

Buffalo announced Warsofsky as its new defense development coach, giving the Marshfield, Mass., native his first position with an NHL organization since ending his playing career.

The move adds another chapter to a hockey journey with deep New England roots. It also creates an unusual full-circle connection between Warsofsky and the Bruins’ Atlantic Division rival.

Warsofsky Returns To NHL In New Role

Warsofsky is moving back into the NHL after a successful season coaching in the ECHL. The 36-year-old served as head coach and director of hockey operations for the South Carolina Stingrays during the 2025-26 season. He guided the team to a 45-23-1-3 record and reached the second round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.

That performance helped Warsofsky make a quick jump. He joined South Carolina as a special advisor in 2024-25 before being promoted to head coach the following season. One year behind the bench was enough to earn an opportunity with Buffalo.

Warsofsky will focus specifically on developing defensemen rather than taking another head-coaching position.

His playing background should make him well suited for the job. Warsofsky was an undersized, puck-moving defenseman who built a 14-year professional career through skating, positioning and offensive awareness. He now can pass those lessons to Buffalo’s younger players.

Buffalo Connection Started With Bruins Debut

The Sabres already held a unique place in Warsofsky’s career before hiring him. Boston recalled Warsofsky from Providence in December 2013. He made his NHL debut on Dec. 19 in a 4-2 Bruins loss to Buffalo.

Warsofsky recorded his first NHL point with an assist and finished with a plus-1 rating. Nine days later, he scored his first career goal against the Ottawa Senators. The Massachusetts native appeared in 10 games for Boston across the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, producing one goal, two assists and a plus-2 rating.

Most of Warsofsky’s time in the organization came with Providence.

He played 230 games for the Bruins’ AHL affiliate and collected 18 goals and 95 points. His best Providence season came in 2013-14, when he recorded 32 points over 56 regular-season games before adding nine points in 12 playoff appearances.

Warsofsky never became an NHL regular in Boston, but he established himself as a productive and dependable AHL defenseman.

Career Remained Closely Connected To Boston

Warsofsky’s connection to the region extended well beyond the Bruins. He played high school hockey in Marshfield before attending Cushing Academy. The St. Louis Blues selected him with the 95th overall pick in the 2008 NHL Draft.

Warsofsky then played three seasons at Boston University, recording 68 points in 113 games. His freshman season ended with a national championship in 2009. Warsofsky also helped the United States win gold at the 2010 World Junior Championship.

The Bruins acquired his rights from St. Louis in June 2010 in exchange for forward Vladimir Sobotka. Warsofsky signed with Boston after completing his junior season at BU.

His professional career eventually took him through several organizations, including Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Colorado and Carolina. He appeared in 55 NHL games and spent most of his career in the AHL and overseas.

That journey gave Warsofsky experience with numerous coaching styles and development systems, knowledge Buffalo now can use with its defensive prospects.

Hockey’s Coaching Family Adds Another NHL Chapter

Warsofsky is not the only member of his family working behind an NHL bench. His older brother, Ryan Warsofsky, is the head coach of the San Jose Sharks. Ryan also began his professional coaching rise with South Carolina before progressing through the AHL and reaching San Jose.

David later followed a similar path by joining the Stingrays and becoming their head coach.

The brothers now hold roles with different NHL organizations, although their responsibilities are not the same. Ryan manages an entire team, while David will concentrate on individual development.

Buffalo’s job could serve as the next step toward a larger coaching position for the former Bruin.

Sabres Give Warsofsky A New Development Challenge

Buffalo hired Warsofsky as part of a wider series of front-office additions and promotions. His responsibility will extend beyond improving players already on the NHL roster. Development coaches typically work throughout an organization, helping prospects refine their technique and prepare for higher levels.

Warsofsky’s experience should provide an especially useful perspective. He understands the transition from college hockey to the AHL and the difficulty of earning an NHL opportunity. He also knows what smaller defensemen must do to overcome physical disadvantages against bigger forwards.

The Sabres remain one of Boston’s divisional rivals, but Warsofsky’s new job is less about an old rivalry than the next stage of his career. He debuted against Buffalo as a Bruins prospect trying to establish himself in the NHL.

Now, he returns to the league responsible for helping Buffalo’s prospects accomplish the same goal.
