Gernot Trauner has decided to retire at the age of 34. The former Feyenoord and Austria centre-back broke the news on Sunday.

The Linz-born Trauner played 137 games for the Rotterdam side, and notably helped them to the Eredivisie title in the 2022-23 season.

Also a 15-time Austria international, Trauner’s career boasts winner’s medals from the KNVB Cup and the Johan Cruyff Shield, while continental success was just out of reach with the UEFA Europa Conference League final defeat to Roma in 2022.

Trauner spoke of his recent decision on social media, saying, “After 16 years of complete dedication and passion for football, the moment has arrived to end my career as a professional footballer.

“The decision was not easy for me, but it feels good and right. I have lived my life on the pitch for many years and tried to get the best out of myself every day. This time was marked by great joy, but also by disappointments, injuries, and comebacks. I never gave up and always believed in my chances.

“I want to thank everyone who guided me during my career and on the way there. First of all, my parents, who travelled countless kilometres to take me as a young player to training and matches. Thanks to all the coaches, supporters, and mentors from whom I was able to learn and who believed in me. And of course, to my friends and family, who always stood by my side. What would football be without the fans? I will never forget the many encounters and your support.”

For Trauner, his departure from the game he loves is partly down to a tumultuous injury history. He concluded, “I am incredibly grateful that I have been able to turn my passion into my profession. Titles, cup victories, the Champions League, the European Championship, and the role as captain have allowed me to look back with great pride. But injuries and disappointments were also part of my journey. They taught me humility and made me who I am today. A new chapter is beginning, and I look forward to new challenges.”
