Another former New York Giants player has found a new home.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN is reporting that the New England Patriots have signed former Giants’ guard Greg Van Roten to a one-year deal.
Van Rotne, 36, is a well-traveled journeyman guard who has played for Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks (practice squad), Toronto Argonauts (CFL), Jacksonville Jaguars (PS), Carolina Panthers, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, and Las Vegas Raiders before signing with the Giants in 2024. The Giants initially signed Van Roten after an injury to (then right tackle) Evan Neal forced them to reshuffle their offensive line.
The Giants moved Jermaine Eluemunor from the left guard position which he was originally intended to play to right tackle, moved Jon Runyan Jr. from right guard to left guard, and then inserted Van Roten at right guard. That lineup — LT Andrew Thomas, LG Jon Runyan Jr., OC John Michael Schmitz, RG Greg Van Roten, RT Jermaine Eluemunor — would ultimately be the Giants starting offensive line for the next two seasons.
Van Roten proved durable despite his age and started each of the next 34 games for the Giants. And while he wasn’t an excellent guard for the Giants, he was dependable.
The Giants opted to move on from Van Roten with the arrival of John Harbaugh, looking to get younger and more powerful at the position. Now Van Roten moves on to the next chapter of his career and will at least provide valuable depth at guard and center for the Patriots.
