Former Notre Dame baseball star Trey Mancini announced his retirement from professional baseball on Tuesday, marking an end to an inspiring Major League Baseball career.
Mancini, 34, played for various teams, including the Baltimore Orioles, Houston Astros, Chicago Cubs, and Los Angeles Angels in his eight seasons. He finished with 129 home runs, 156 doubles, 404 RBIs and a .775 OPS for his career.
Before his career in the majors, Mancini had one of the most storied careers in Notre Dame history. The first baseman appeared in 107 games in 2011-12 and batted .320 with 21 home runs, 79 RBIs, and 80 runs scored for the Fighting Irish.
The Baltimore Orioles selected Mancini in the eighth round of the 2013 MLB Draft, and quickly became a mainstay for the Orioles.
Mancini's career took an unfortunate turn when he was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer in 2020. He missed an entire shortened season due to surgery and treatment. He returned in 2021 and hit 21 home runs with 71 RBIs, earning him the American League Comeback Player of the Year honors.
Mancini's impact on baseball will forever be felt outside just the box score. For Notre Dame fans, he remains a beloved former player who performed admirably at the highest level.
