Persistent rain has delayed the start of play on Sunday, August 16, at the Galle International Stadium, where India and Sri Lanka are contesting the opening Test of the two-match series. Groundstaff covered the entire outfield as conditions remained unfavourable, and no confirmed resumption time was available at the time of this report.

The interruption arrives at a moment when India hold a commanding position. The visitors closed Day 1 on 288 for 2, with Devdutt Padikkal unbeaten on 131 and Rishabh Pant on 27 not out at the crease. Adding to the occasion, this match marks India's 600th Test appearance, making the rain delay all the more frustrating for the touring side.

Update from Galle 🏟️

Start of play on Day 2 has been delayed due to rain.

Stay tuned for further updates.

How did India do on Day 1?

India's opening day was shaped by a series of measured contributions across the top order. Yashasvi Jaiswal gave the innings an early foundation before being run out for 32, a dismissal that brought Shubman Gill to the crease. Gill's stay was ended by Prabath Jayasuriya, who was Sri Lanka's only wicket-taker on the day and the sole bowler to make a meaningful breakthrough.

KL Rahul then played a composed and patient knock of 77 before he was forced to retire hurt after suffering cramps, a setback that brought Padikkal into the spotlight. The left-hander responded emphatically, registering his maiden Test century and carrying his bat through to stumps on 131 not out. Pant arrived late in the day and was unbeaten on 27 as India closed on 288 for 2, with Sri Lanka's bowling attack largely unable to create consistent pressure throughout the 90 overs.

What is at stake if rain continues to eat into Day 2?

With only two wickets down and two well-set batters at the crease, India are positioned to extend their total significantly once play resumes. Padikkal, already past his century, and Pant, who is yet to fully accelerate, represent a partnership with the potential to push India well beyond 450.

Any further rain on Day 2 would reduce the overs available for India to bat and, subsequently, limit the time the hosts have to respond with the bat. A compressed match across the remaining days could affect the result, particularly if the Galle surface begins to assist spin as the game progresses. The exact restart time remained unconfirmed at the time of writing.
