When the Boston Red Sox traded Rafael Devers, it seemed to be one of the more questionable moves in Major League Baseball at the time. The Red Sox, unfortunately, have made their fair share of strange trades in recent years.
The Devers one wasn't as questionable as the Mookie Betts trade, but the left-handed-hitting third baseman was one of the best players in baseball before he was dealt. If there was one positive for the Red Sox, it was the fact that Devers was on a 10-year, $313.5 million contract.
Fast forward to 2026 with the San Francisco Giants after he was traded to San Francisco before the 2025 trade deadline, and Devers has one of the worst contracts in baseball.
He has a 121 OPS+, which isn't bad, but he's not the same hitter he was in Boston.
According to one report, San Francisco currently has no easy way out of moving on from him.
“The Devers trade made sense at the time, giving the Giants the big-name slugger they kept missing in free agency. But in retrospect, the timing looks off. There is no easy way out for Posey, who told local media after the Aug. 3 trade deadline — when he drew largely favorable reviews — he “was glad” to have Devers, Adames and Chapman still on the team,” Grant Brisbee of The Athletic wrote.
It might not be unfair to say the Giants shouldn't trade him, or even want to, but the fairer point is that they aren't in a position to win and probably don't need a guy making $30-plus million a season on their payroll.
That could eventually lead to a trade if a team is willing to take on that money.
