The NFL’s first preseason week has come to a close. Teams got a good look at where some of their rosters stand. This is a valuable time to work out some kinks in all three phases. It also provides getting extended looks at rookie talent. The New York Giants, though, might’ve had a close call on Saturday afternoon. Their quarterback, Jaxson Dart, took a brutal hit from Minnesota Vikings defender Jay Ward. He was pulled from the game to be evaluated for a concussion after being slow to get up. Ultimately, he was cleared to return to action. After the game, though, Dart spoke to the media and frankly didn’t understand why he was pulled. He felt like it’s a recurring trend every time he is hit, if anything. MORE: Jaxson Dart’s brutal hit should make Giants rethink preseason risk “I really respect the rules, and the thought behind, you know, the NFL has of keeping players healthy and reviewing things,” Dart said. “But at the same time, I’m still puzzled by just feeling like every time that I get hit, you know, I just find my way in there. Which, at times, I still try to wrap my head around, but that’s all that I’m gonna say about that situation.” Dart needs to protect himself Aug 15, 2026; East Rutherford, New Jersey, USA; New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart (6) walks off the field after the game against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium. Mandatory Credit: John Jones-Imagn Images Credit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect (Reuters) Dart’s willingness to stand in the pocket and absorb contact is part of what makes him an exciting young quarterback. However, he also needs to learn when to live to fight another down. The NFL has taken concussion protocols seriously. Dart can’t afford to put himself in unnecessary danger while trying to make a play. He also can’t afford to not think of his health and the long-term future. Though getting pulled is frustrating, it is necessary. MORE: Ty Simpson rookie debut for Los Angeles Rams proves he was the right pick At this point, the Giants also need to protect Dart from himself. He’s a competitor who clearly doesn’t want to leave the field, but his long-term health has to take priority over finishing a preseason possession. It also needs to be a priority for his future’s sake. Mandatory Credit: John Jones-Imagn Images Credit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect (Reuters) Dart’s toughness isn’t in question. In fact, the Giants should appreciate that mentality. However, learning to protect himself is an important part of becoming a franchise quarterback. If Dart can find that balance, he’ll give himself a better chance to stay healthy and extend his career. — Enjoy free coverage of the top news & trending stories with The Big Lead Newsletter —
