The New York Giants shuffled their defensive backfield on Thursday, signing a pair of free-agent defensive backs ahead of Saturday’s preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium.
The club added safety Ugochukwu Amadi and cornerback Sam Webb. To create the necessary roster spots, the Giants waived cornerback D.J. James with an injury designation and released cornerback David Long Jr.

Amadi, a 2019 fourth-round selection by the Seattle Seahawks out of Oregon, arrives with seven seasons of NFL experience. The versatile defensive back has played for the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans, Kansas City Chiefs—where he earned a Super Bowl ring—and Saints, contributing both in the secondary and on special teams.
Webb, an undrafted free agent from Missouri Western in 2022, has spent time with the Las Vegas Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Titans, Cleveland Browns, and most recently the Denver Broncos. The cornerback provides additional depth and competition.
James and Long had been signed only eight days earlier on Aug. 5 as part of an earlier effort to reinforce a depleted secondary.
James, a 2024 sixth-round pick by Seattle out of Auburn, and Long, a former third-round selection of the Los Angeles Rams from Michigan, were both let go in Thursday’s corresponding moves.
The rapid turnover underscores the Giants’ ongoing work to strengthen the defensive backs group as training camp nears its conclusion and the preseason slate begins.
