The upcoming stretch of games could be what makes or breaks the Cleveland Guardians' playoff hopes and season as a whole.  The Guardians couldn't have gotten off to a better start to this critical four-series stretch, with an 8-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants. President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti stressed over the weekend that Cleveland needed to start putting together more complete games, and that's exactly what the Guardians did on Tuesday evening.  As a team, the Guardians tallied 12 hits in the series opener, with the vast majority of the run production coming from newcomer Jo Adell, who continues to be the player exactly who Cleveland envisioned when trading for him at the deadline.  Adell ended up going 3-for-4 at the plate, and his six RBI set a new career-high for the right-handed slugger. Aug 18, 2026; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Guardians right fielder Jo Adell (7) celebrates after hitting a RBI single during the second inning against the San Francisco Giants at Progressive Field. Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-Imagn Images His first hit and three RBI came in the first inning as Adell uncorked and blasted a changeup left in the middle of the zone well over the right-field wall. The ball was hit 455 feet, making it the farthest home run hit by a Guardians player this season. Cleveland's skipper said after the game his reaction to a home run like that is "just watch it," and noted that it's not too often a player gets that close to hitting the jumbo tron in Progressive Field.

Adell's next scoring hit came in the bottom of the second inning. He smoked a ball right back up the middle, which came off the bat at just over 109 mph, and scored Steven Kwan and Jose Ramirez.  Unfortunately, Adell was removed from the game after experiencing pain in his left knee following a pitch to it earlier in the game. Chase DeLuater was also unavailable off the bench after experiencing some hamstring tightness on Sunday. Not only were the Guardians able to put a couple of crooked numbers on the board this inning, but the pitching did its part, too. Foster Griffin was shaky earlier on in the outing, but ended up throwing 6.0 full innings, gave up five hits, one home run, and struck out six batters. Matt Festa, Tim Herrin, and Craig Yoho came out of the bullpen and did their job, covering the final two innings without allowing a base runner and combining to strike out six hitters. All things considered, this was about as complete of game the Guardians have put together all year.  "I thought it was just a really well-played game by our guys. I loved that we kept piling on runs and building separation," continued Vogt. The Guardians will look to snap their five-series losing streak on Wednesday evening with a victory over the Giants.
