Australia were dismissed for 198 in their first innings of the opening Test against Bangladesh at Marrara Stadium in Darwin from August 13-17, 2026. Steve Smith top-scored with 71, but the batting unit struggled against Bangladesh's attack, with Hasan Mahmud claiming 6 for 55. The performance prompted strong criticism from former Australian captain Ricky Ponting.

Ponting expressed serious concerns about Australia's approach and execution in the match. He highlighted the decision to bat first after winning the toss, arguing that the conditions favoured the home team's seamers. The former captain felt Australia had missed a significant opportunity to strengthen their squad depth during these two Test matches against Bangladesh.

"There was a lot of early-season rustiness. They haven't played for a long time, but you can't excuse some of the technical issues and flaws we saw from the top order in particular. I was surprised Australia actually chose to bat, especially with Bangladesh coming off just 54 in the warm-up game. The Australian seamers on that wicket yesterday morning would have been near-on unplayable," Ponting said while speaking on the SEN's Fireball.

Why Australia's toss decision drew Ponting's criticism

Ponting pointed out that Australia's total fell short of expectations given the opposition's recent form. He stressed that the team needed to consider introducing younger players to the Test setup rather than relying solely on the current squad. The former skipper emphasised the importance of building for the future while managing the team's age profile.

"When you win the toss and decide to bat, everyone is expecting a few more than 190 against an attack like that. I still feel like they missed an opportunity in these couple of games to look at some younger talent that we've got in Australia. Go with a bit of gut feel and pick on talent because what we've got in the current side now, and it has been for a couple of years, has not looked up to the mark of Test cricket level," Ponting said.

Ponting had previously advocated for blooding younger talent such as Campbell Kellaway and Ollie Peake in these two Test matches against Bangladesh. He expressed concern about the alternative of debuting young players in more challenging conditions during the upcoming tour of South Africa.

Australia's age profile and the road ahead

Australia's squad composition reflects a significant age challenge heading into a demanding period. Yesterday's team is the oldest since 1928, with Cameron Green being the youngest player in the side and everyone else well above 30 years old. The team faces 21 Tests until the end of the World Test Championship, including home matches against New Zealand and away tours to South Africa and India.

"Yesterday's team is the oldest since 1928, so you talk about an aging team and a rebuild. That's the case. Cameron Green is the youngest in the team and everyone else is well and truly above 30. They've got 21 Tests coming up until the end of the World Test Championship. They're at home to New Zealand, they're away to South Africa, and they're away to India," Ponting said.

Ponting predicted that Australia would necessarily rotate their squad across this demanding schedule. He suggested that the team would organically introduce new players to manage workload and develop depth across the Test format.

"Inevitably, they'll be going through 16-18 players in this next little run. So I think organically it will start to happen where guys will be coming in and out just to try and manage them through until the end of it," Ponting said.

Australia are in a spot of bother in the first Test, as Bangladesh have already extended their lead beyond the 100-run mark. The home side will have to bat really well to make a comeback in this Test match.
