News of the Carolina Panthers' addition of tight end Darren Waller first broke on Wednesday night. But as we sit here now, almost 24 hours later, the signing has still not been made official. So, what's the holdup? According to Mike Kaye of ESPN and Joe Person of The Athletic, the Panthers plan on solidifying Waller's deal after their preseason game against the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. Per Person, the 33-year-old pass catcher will sign his contract on Monday—pending a physical. Waiting until then gives the Panthers a little extra flexibility for their trip to Highmark Stadium this weekend. Parting ways with a current member of the roster to free up a spot for Waller—who won't be suiting up for Saturday's contest, in any event—would essentially leave Carolina a man down. Landing on who to cut for Waller may also become an easier choice. Whether it's as a result of an underwhelming performance or an injury from the exhibition, that decision might be essentially made for them. Excluding Waller, at least for now, the Panthers are currently carrying six tight ends—Tommy Tremble, Mitchell Evans, Ja'Tavion Sanders, Feleipe Franks, James Mitchell and Caden Prieskorn.
