Odin Hensley, a football player at Lake Travis High School in Texas, has died after a medical emergency at practice earlier this week. He was 17.

Hensley’s family confirmed to the Austin American-Statesman that Hensley died late Wednesday.

Hensley suffered cardiac arrest Monday morning at practice. He was taken to the Dell Children’s Medical Center where he spent two days in the ICU prior to his death.

The Lake Travis Independent School District remembered Hensley in an email sent to the school community Thursday, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

“At Lake Travis High School, he was a dedicated two-sport athlete who excelled in wrestling and football,” the statement said. “His teachers and coaches remember Odin as a kind, determined young man who was a valued teammate, classmate, and friend. His presence touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed.”

Lake Travis High School head coach Hank Carter acknowledged on X that a serious medical emergency occurred Monday morning at practice but did not share the player’s name.

“Dear Parents, At approximately 8:00 am this morning at football practice, one of our student-athletes experienced a serious health emergency which required the assistance of Travis County STAR Flight. Out of an abundance of caution, we canceled the remainder of today’s football activities,” Carter said.

“While I cannot share any details surrounding the situation, I sincerely appreciate the calls, emails, and texts offering support. I am extremely grateful for our athletic training staff, coaches, LTISD PD, and the first responders who arrived on site within minutes of the call. Our thoughts and prayers are with the player and his family at this time. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.”

A GoFundMe page was started to help the family with medical expenses and to support Hensley’s parents as they miss work.

As of Thursday morning, more than $157,000 has been raised.
