Image Credit: taniavolobueva / Shutterstock. Hugh Laurie has publicly backed Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham after an X exchange prompted by the debate over transgender participation in women's sports. The House star said he does not believe "men should compete against women" before directly declaring his support for Cunningham, who has spoken in favor of excluding transgender girls and women from girls' and women's sports. Laurie's comments followed a dispute with writer and comedian Graham Linehan, who called the actor's initial approach to the subject "cowardly." Laurie responded with profanity, rejected that characterization and then stated his position more directly. Cunningham, meanwhile, has said she wants girls and women protected in sports while rejecting accusations that she hates transgender people. The WNBA has since discussed the broader eligibility question but says there is no immediate transgender eligibility matter affecting the league. Graham Linehan Called Laurie’s First Post ‘Cowardly’

You started it. ‘Cowardly’ to ‘fuck off’ is the going rate of exchange around here. And yes, I support Sophie Cunningham. And you, some of the time. — Hugh Laurie (@hughlaurie) August 10, 2026

Laurie entered the discussion on Aug. 9 with a post about the unusual physical demands of professional basketball. "Strange this whole broigus should happen in professional basketball, where 99.9% of the world are, effectively, 'women,'" Laurie wrote. He went on to cite a statistic he attributed to Pablo Torre about the percentage of American men between 20 and 40 who are at least seven feet tall and already playing in the NBA. The dry comparison did not satisfy Linehan. In a reply that was later deleted, he asked whether Laurie believed men should be allowed to compete in women's sports and accused the actor of being "cowardly" by approaching the question indirectly, according to Fox News and OutKick. Laurie responded bluntly, beginning with "Firstly, f--- off" before saying, "I don't believe men should compete against women." He added that he thought his position had already been clear. Linehan then pressed him to state directly whether he supported Cunningham. "And yes, I support Sophie Cunningham," Laurie replied, while also telling Linehan that he supported him "some of the time." Linehan subsequently apologized for what he called his "knee-jerkiness" and credited Laurie's British sketch series A Bit of Fry & Laurie as an inspiration for his own comedy career. Cunningham Said She Wants to Protect Young Girls in Sports      View this post on Instagram            A post shared by IndyStar Sports (@indystarsports)

The exchange followed weeks of debate surrounding comments Cunningham made in a wide-ranging ESPN profile published July 21. ESPN characterized Cunningham's position as supporting restrictions on transgender girls and women competing in girls' and women's sports. Cunningham said she had received criticism from people who believed her position meant she hated transgender people, something she denied. "I never once said that," Cunningham told ESPN, adding that she was "here to extend love." She also said she wanted to protect young girls in sports who, in her words, "shouldn't have to go against biological men." The 29-year-old guard described herself as politically "in the middle" and said people had made broader assumptions about her political beliefs based on her background, appearance and comments. Cunningham addressed the controversy again when reporters asked about it the following day. In video shared by IndyStar Sports, she said, "I said what I said. I think it's kind of common sense." She said she would continue supporting what she sees as protections for girls in sports even as the comments drew both criticism and public support. WNBA Task Force Did Not Adopt New Eligibility Rules The discussion has since expanded beyond Cunningham and Laurie. On Aug. 12, a WNBA task force made up of team presidents and general managers discussed transgender athletes as well as online abuse directed at players. The meeting did not result in new eligibility rules, according to ESPN. "There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA," the league said after the meeting. The league also condemned what it described as "bad-faith efforts" to use the issue to demean or marginalize people and said discussions with stakeholders would continue. The current 2026 collective bargaining agreement states that "only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA." However, ESPN reported that the agreement contains no additional definition of "woman" and that the league has no publicly available policy specifically explaining eligibility for transgender or intersex athletes. No known transgender woman has played in the WNBA. Players and Coaches Have Expressed Different Views Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve has publicly advocated for transgender inclusion and argued that the issue requires nuance rather than a blanket exclusion. Seattle Storm center Stefanie Dolson has also publicly expressed support for transgender rights. The Women's National Basketball Players Association has emphasized inclusion while condemning hate and abuse directed at transgender people. The union said it is willing to engage in difficult conversations but does not want players used as "political pawns." Cunningham's Fever teammate Caitlin Clark has declined to take a specific side on an eligibility policy. She said questions about participation should be addressed by leagues and governing bodies in consultation with athletes, while her own focus remains on playing basketball.
