Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is not one to take it easy on his team. Johnson has long been known as a football guru who lives and breathes the game and is dedicated to his team, which is why it is not surprising that he decided to have a heavier install volume this training camp as opposed to last year. This has made training camp a bit challenging for quarterback Caleb Williams and the offense so far. But, now that the install period is slowing down, things should be better for Chicago’s offense in camp. "He came out of the gate hot. Those first four practices were really, really good," Johnson said. "As the volume has continued to go up, and it’s my fault because I’ve put in more this year on offense than a year ago by design, I want it to feel like a lot right now. Now that things will slow down from an install point, we’re going to see him continue to go on the upswing."
Williams and the offense were performing well in the first week of training camp, but they took a step back in the second week with numerous miscues including false starts, delay of game penalties and problems with the center-quarterback exchange. It is unclear how much the starters will play this preseason, if at all. Johnson already announced that a good number of starters won't play in the preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns on Saturday, including Williams. "Do I need to see Caleb Williams in the preseason? No, I do not. I see him every single day in practice," Johnson said, noting that Williams will be ready for Week 1 based on what he's seen during practice this summer.
