Despite enjoying a relatively productive four-year spell with Borussia Dortmund, it would be fair to say that Karim Adeyemi has yet to truly fulfil his potential.

A tally of 36 goals and 25 assists in 146 appearances are generally not the type of statistics which will garner interest from La Liga giants Barcelona.

However, with his contract at Dortmund scheduled to expire in 2027, the Catalan club decided that a €22 million transfer fee was a market opportunity they could not ignore.

Adeyemi will now head into the 2026-27 La Liga season with the chance to shine under a manager who believes in him.

Read on as we assess Adeyemi’s move to Barcelona.

Flick the driving force behind surprise move

Manager Hansi Flick is undoubtedly the driving force behind Barcelona’s surprise move for the German international winger.

Flick handed Adeyemi his national team debut in a World Cup qualifier against Armenia in September 2021. He scored in an emphatic 6-0 victory.

He also named him in Germany’s ill-fated 2022 World Cup campaign in Qatar, but did not bring him off the bench in any of their three group-stage games.

Adeyemi made three appearances during qualification for this summer’s tournament, but was omitted from Julian Nagelsmann’s final 26-man squad.

The move to Barcelona gives the 24-year-old the opportunity to work under a manager who clearly appreciates what he brings to the table.

Adeyemi is the type of dynamic player who should flourish at Barcelona, with his pace and work rate making him an ideal option for Flick’s tactical system.

However, he may need to be patient as his route to a regular role in the first-team is blocked by several elite-level attacking players.

Impact role could work to Adeyemi’s advantage

Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Anthony Gordon will each expect to be regular starters for Barcelona, which makes life difficult for Adeyemi.

Many of his most effective recent performances for Dortmund came off the bench, and he may initially be forced to adopt a similar role in Spain.

This could work to Adeyemi’s advantage, as he will be able to fly under the radar rather than have the pressure of being Barcelona’s main man.

His ability to play anywhere across the front line will naturally create game time opportunities as the season progresses.

Loanee Marcus Rashford performed a similar role last season and ended the campaign with 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances.

If Adeyemi can replicate those numbers in his debut season, he would be well-placed to make a bigger impact further down the line.

Patience will be a virtue for Adeyemi this term, with other players likely to feature ahead of him. If he accepts his impact role, he could benefit in the future.

Tough love may bring out the best in Adeyemi

Flick’s man-management skills could ultimately help Adeyemi to fulfil his potential, provided he is willing to take on board what he is told.

He was criticised last December for reacting badly to being substituted in a 2-0 victory over Borussia Monchengladbach, and Flick will not tolerate similar antics.

The manager was not overly impressed with Adeyemi on his debut for the club in a recent friendly against English Championship club Birmingham City.

The German winger was substituted at half time, along with three other new teammates. He failed complete a dribble and lost possession nine times.

“Karim – some things he did were not that good,” Flick said. “I think he has more potential to show, but he is still in the first week of training, so that’s normal.

“I’ve seen a better Karim in training with his speed and finishing, but he has a lot of potential and can give us a lot.”

Adeyemi showed more promise in subsequent friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, although there are still elements of his game which need work.

Flick loves having pace on the flanks, so Adeyemi’s speed will be a useful asset to have as Barcelona chase silverware on multiple fronts.

Having showed promise during his time at Dortmund, the German international forward has arrived at a crucial juncture in his career.

It is worth noting that Raphinha was 25 when he joined Barcelona from Leeds United, and he had a massive point to prove after completing his move.

Adeyemi still has time on his side to demonstrate his ability. Working under Flick and playing for Barcelona could be the catalyst for him to final live up to his billing.
