How Keenan Allen signing with Colts affects Alec Pierce originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here. The Colts just picked up an NFL legend. It could be a great addition or it could be a bad omen for the franchise.  Indianapolis signed Keenan Allen to a 1-year deal worth up to $8.32 million. The 6-time Pro Bowler played for the Bears last year, racking up 70 catches for 744 yards and 7 TD's.  Not bad for an NFL elder.  Allen, 34, has a chance to contribute to a Colts offense with a fantastic running game behind Jonathan Taylor. There's only one problem.  Indianapolis has another wide receiver, Alec Pierce, whose injury status is a major concern. Signing Allen could be a sign that Pierce's injury is worse than expected. Alec Pierce injury could be worse than expected after Keenan Allen signing Alec Pierce has been fighting the injury bug all offseason and into training camp. After undergoing ankle surgery, the $116 million man has not participated in team activities.  Colts' GM Chris Ballard says he expects Pierce to be ready for week 1 of the season. Signing a veteran wide receiver with weeks left before the opener isn't exactly a resounding shriek of confidence. There have been no reports of a setback for Pierce but head coach Shane Steichen also said he's not ready to return this week. MORE: Will Von Miller start for Cowboys? Dallas depth chart after signing Pro Bowl linebacker With Pierce out that leaves Allen to join Josh Downs and tight end Tyler Warren on Daniel Jones' thin receiving corps.

Allen’s numbers last season (81 catches, 777 yards, 4 TDs) are right in line with what Michael Pittman Jr. (80 catches, 784 yards, 7 TDs) did for the Colts https://t.co/lYwX3FXo4C — Joel A. Erickson (@JoelAErickson) August 18, 2026 Allen has been serviceable since his glory days as a Charger but can he produce like a top 3 option?  He might have to prove it if Pierce can't return.
