Last season may have been proof that money can't buy a championship, but it sure does help. Indiana walked to a national title with several impactful transfers, including Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, but didn't have a roster littered with blue-chip recruits. The Oregon Ducks will never be short on talent, and the price tag on the 2026 roster proves it. Dan Lanning's big goal will be to get over the hump and prevent the season-ending blowout that has become too common at this point. NIL spending is only rising around the nation, including for the Hoosiers and Ducks, and the clock is ticking to improve and find the right combination heading into the season. NIL money and talent raise the floor of a team and program, while coaching and situational execution bring championships. The Ducks have the funding and the roster required to reach the College Football Playoff, arguably possessing the best roster in the country in terms of talent. Just how much is Oregon spending? The numbers are staggering. CBS Sports' Chris Hummer and John Talty polled 50 people within Power Four programs, ranging from athletic directors and general managers to boosters that keep the program afloat, to find how much the best programs in the country are spending to assemble their roster this season. With revenue sharing and collective dollars more available, some teams saw the payroll leap up, but the Ducks are routinely among the biggest spenders. Oregon is listed as one of the programs spending more than $40 million this season on the roster, with quarterback Dante Moore, a Heisman contender and potential top 3 pick, being the most expensive commodity. Moore is fourth in all of college sports in terms of NIL valuation, being worth $5 million according to On3's NIL Valuation tool. "When Oregon and Miami walk in with dollar bills floating out of their ass, you have to out-eval people, or you're going to get beat," one SEC front office staffer told CBS Sports. LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Texas and Texas A&M are also programs expected to be spending more than $40 million this season on the roster. That lines up with the recruiting rankings, which typically feature each program, including Oregon, within the top 10 or 15, and they are all aggressive in the transfer portal as well. Oregon's biggest supporter is obvious. Being deemed "Nike University," Phil Knight is still funding the Ducks' roster to hopefully see a national championship in his lifetime. As long as Knight remains one of Oregon's donors, the Ducks will be able to build any roster they dream of in the future. "Oregon and the 88-year-old Knight don't want to come off as overspending, but there's no question the Ducks are in the top tier nationally in total roster spend," Hummer and Talty wrote. "Oregon has two high-profile quarterbacks in Dante Moore (who could have been a top-3 pick) and incoming Nebraska transfer Dylan Raiola. The Ducks are especially loaded on defense, too, which includes former first-team All-Big Ten safety Koi Perich." Again, money can't buy a championship, but it sure can set the table for one. Expectations for the Ducks are as high as ever this season, given the returning production, experience in the College Football Playoff, and the overall talent on the roster. Oregon landed at No. 2 in the preseason AP Top 25 Poll, the highest mark in program history, simply because of the talent on hand this season in Eugene.
