San Francisco is expected to rest most of its established starters in the opener, making Thursday an important evaluation opportunity for the younger players and roster hopefuls. The 49ers enter another season with championship expectations behind Brock Purdy and an offense that added Mike Evans during the offseason, but the preseason will be particularly important for sorting out depth and position battles. San Francisco will also get its first game look at a defense now coordinated by Raheem Morris after Robert Saleh departed during the offseason.

Tennessee is taking a much different approach. New head coach Robert Saleh said the Titans plan to play “everyone” in the preseason opener, giving the team’s starters an opportunity to get live reps against Saleh’s former club. The game will also offer an early look at rookie running back Nick Singleton, who has drawn attention during training camp and will get his first chance to translate that work into an NFL game. With Saleh beginning his tenure against the organization where he most recently served as defensive coordinator, there is an added layer of familiarity to Tennessee’s first preseason test.
