English giants Arsenal and Manchester City will contest the FA Community Shield at the Principality Stadium on Sunday as the top two teams in the country collide. The Gunners ended their 22-year search for Premier League honors in May, while City won both the FA Cup and EFL Cup before Pep Guardiola ended his decade-long stay at the club.
Sunday’s visit to Cardiff will therefore mark another unofficial debut for Enzo Maresca in the City dugout, and the Italian has a chance to add his first piece of silverware at the helm. Mikel Arteta hasn’t contested the Community Shield since Arsenal last won the title in 2023, when it just so happened to be City he pipped to the prize.
Arsenal is on an unsavory run of three pre-season games without a win, suffering defeats to Real Betis and Borussia Dortmund before drawing 1-1 against Como (albeit winning the resulting penalty shootout). City, meanwhile, has gone undefeated this summer, having drawn against Inter Milan before sealing wins over Atletico Madrid and a team of K League All-Stars.
Elliot Anderson is set to make his City debut after completing a $155 million move to the Etihad from Nottingham Forest this summer, while 17-year-old Jeremy Monga is also in line to be part of Maresca’s squad after an $18m move from Leicester City. Arsenal handed a debut to $100m signing Bruno Guimaraes in the recent draw against Como, and the Brazilian could continue his integration in Cardiff on Sunday.
