Friday’s preseason opener between the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons offers an early look at two teams with playoff aspirations, but much of the attention in Atlanta will be on the players competing for larger roles before Week 1.

The Broncos already know Bo Nix will lead their offense when the regular season arrives, so Sean Payton has decided there is little reason to risk him in the first exhibition game. Nix will sit against Atlanta while many of Denver’s other healthy starters receive a short stint, opening the door for Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger to handle the quarterback duties. Beyond quarterback, the game gives Denver its first live opportunity to evaluate the depth of a roster looking to build on consecutive playoff appearances.

There is considerably more uncertainty at quarterback for Atlanta. Tua Tagovailoa will start Friday and is expected to be part of a starting group that plays approximately 10 snaps, while Michael Penix Jr. remains sidelined as he recovers from last season’s ACL injury. With Atlanta yet to officially settle its QB1 job, Tagovailoa’s brief appearance will be one of the most interesting portions of the opener before Cooper Rush and Jack Strand take over, and the focus shifts toward the Falcons’ roster battles.
