The debate over whether a WNBA player could ever defeat an NBA player in a 1-on-1 matchup has dragged on for years.

Long debated by fans across social media, the question of whether a WNBA player could ever beat an NBA star 1-on-1 always sparks fierce arguments.

While basketball skills overlap heavily, discussions inevitably center on fundamental physical differences like sheer height, raw athleticism, and rim mechanics, making it an endless sporting debate.

The WNBA is currently experiencing a massive boom, driven largely by stars like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese bringing millions of new eyes to the league.

But there’s still a major difference when it comes to on the court in the eyes of Seattle Storm guard Flau’jae Johnson.

Flau’jae Johnson settled the debate on whether a WNBA player can beat an NBA player

Shannon Sharpe was talking over a year ago with WNBA star Flau’jae Johnson on his YouTube channel about if a WNBA player can beat an NBA player, and her response was pretty emphatic.

“It’s not physically possible. I can barely grab rim and you’re over the backboard, no. Even the 12th man, those guys can dunk. You know how hard it is to get in the NBA? Those dudes are All-American. I have a new appreciation for the Summer league, those dudes are fighting for 1-2 spots. I can’t get in that argument because i know i can’t. I’m 5’10.”

The physical gap at the center of the 1-on-1 debate has taken on fresh relevance following recent stunts from former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White.

Both declared for the 2027 WNBA draft to challenge league eligibility rules, reigniting fierce public arguments over biological advantages and competitive fairness.

But it’s interesting to get the perspective of someone in the WNBA.
