Bangladesh's nine-wicket victory over Australia at Marrara Oval in Darwin on August 16, 2026 triggered a wave of social media reaction, with Iceland Cricket seizing on the result to land a pointed jibe at England.

The post highlighted that both sides hold exactly one Test win on Australian soil across that period, a comparison that carried considerable weight given England's standing in world cricket.

"Fun fact: Bangladesh now have the same number of Test wins in Australia as England do in the last 15 years!," Iceland Cricket wrote on X.

England's only recent win in Australia puts Iceland Cricket's post in context

England's only victory in Australia during that span came in December 2025, when Ben Stokes's side claimed a four-wicket result at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in the 2025-26 Ashes series. That win ended a wait of 5,468 days for England to record a Test victory on Australian soil.

Bangladesh, by contrast, had never previously won a Test in Australia. The Darwin match was only their third appearance in the country, and they had not played a Test on Australian soil for 23 years before this series. It was also only the second time Bangladesh had beaten Australia in a Test, their first coming in Mirpur when they won by 20 runs, a match in which Shakib Al Hasan took 10 wickets.

How Bangladesh's nine-wicket win in Darwin unfolded

The performance in Darwin was dominant from the opening day. Hasan Mahmud took 6 for 55 as Australia were dismissed for 198 in their first innings, with Steve Smith top-scoring on 71. Bangladesh replied with 426, built around Tanzid Hasan's maiden Test century of 101, Najmul Hossain Shanto's 84 and Mehidy Hasan Miraz's 65. Josh Hazlewood was the most successful Australian bowler with 6 for 89.

Australia's second innings offered greater resistance. Cameron Green scored 104 and Smith added 44, but Mehidy claimed 5 for 66 and Mahmud took 3 for 56 to bowl the hosts out for 284. Bangladesh needed only 57 to win and reached the target for the loss of one wicket. Mominul Haque cut Beau Webster to the fence for the winning runs, finishing on 30 not out alongside Shadman Islam on 25 not out.

The result was all the more striking given that Bangladesh had collapsed to 54 all out in a warm-up fixture against the CA XI just days before the Test, and they were without pace bowler Nahid Rana for the series. Pat Cummins captained Australia in the match. The second Test between the two sides is scheduled for August 22 to 26 at Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay.
