Jasprit Bumrah remains unavailable for India's two-Test series against Sri Lanka as he continues his recovery programme at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. The star pacer sustained an impact injury to his left knee while fielding during the second ODI in Cardiff on July 16, 2026. Reactive swelling developed overnight, and medical staff ruled him out of the third ODI on July 19. Scans conducted on July 24 revealed soreness in his left knee, and doctors administered an injection to manage the inflammation. Bumrah rested until July 30, after which he reported to the Centre of Excellence to begin his structured rehabilitation.

Cricket analyst Aakash Chopra has questioned India's approach to managing Bumrah's workload during this period. Speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show broadcast on Doordarshan, Chopra addressed the decision to rest the pacer ahead of the upcoming Test matches. The absence of Bumrah represents a significant change to India's bowling attack, with uncapped pacer Auqib Nabi added to the squad as his replacement for the series.

"If you have a genius like Jasprit Bumrah, and if his body needs some rest, if his workload needs to be managed, why would you not do it? Bumrah is a genius. Many people believe that if you are fit, then you should play. If you are not, then don't play," Chopra said while speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan.

"India will still manage. It will manage. Life goes on, whether there is someone or not. But if you have a genius like Bumrah, if his body needs some rest, if his workload needs to be managed, why would you not do it? It's a very simple thing," he added.

The analyst's comment reflects the broader conversation around balancing the demands placed on India's premier fast bowler with the need to keep him available for major assignments. No official timeline has been set for Bumrah's return to international cricket.

Why Chopra questions the workload decision

The two-Test series against Sri Lanka begins on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium, with India led by Shubman Gill. The decision to rest Bumrah underscores the importance placed on his fitness for the longer format, particularly given his status as one of the world's leading fast bowlers. The timing of his absence coincides with India's preparation for the Test series, where his presence would normally be considered essential to the team's bowling strategy.

In Bumrah's absence, Mohammed Siraj will lead the pace attack, while the likes of Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar are there to support him. However, it will be interesting to see if Nabi gets a game, especially because of his batting abilities, which are better than those of all the other pacers in the squad.
