England reappointed Joe Root as Test captain following Ben Stokes' international retirement, leaving Harry Brook to continue leading the white-ball teams with focus on the upcoming World Cup. The 27-year-old had expressed hope earlier in the year that he might be asked to succeed Stokes across all formats, but selector Marcus North explained that the decision to keep Brook in the white-ball role was made to avoid burdening him with all-format captaincy pressures. Brook remains a future Test captain candidate within England's plans.

Brook addressed the captaincy decision and reflected on the period surrounding a nightclub incident in Wellington that occurred during England's tour of New Zealand. He acknowledged uncertainty about whether that episode had influenced the selectors' choice, but emphasised his support for Root's appointment and his readiness to work alongside the returning captain.

"I dunno. I honestly don't know. I don't really look at it like that. The decision to make Rooty captain is the right one. I'm actually really excited to see what he can do. He's definitely the right man to take over that job. I'm really looking forward to working alongside him," said Brook on BBC Sport.

Brook's approach to social media and scrutiny

The challenging period that followed the Wellington incident tested Brook's character and resolve. He described how difficult it was to prepare for media scrutiny while at home, but he took pride in his response and his team's performance in the white-ball formats during that time. The experience reinforced for him the weight of responsibility that comes with captaincy, both on and off the field.

"It was a tough period, especially when I was at home, getting ready to face the media. I feel like the character that I showed throughout that period to go out there and still perform and lead the white-ball side fairly well - I was proud of myself and the team. I don't want to say it's helped me, but it's made me realise how big it is to be England captain. It's not just the leadership on the field. It makes a massive difference if you can lead with responsibility off the field," Brook said.

Brook has also reflected on his approach to social media and public scrutiny. He acknowledged that during his time at the Indian Premier League, he became caught up in online criticism, which affected his performance and wellbeing. He has since adjusted his relationship with social media, choosing not to actively seek out commentary about himself while recognising that scrutiny can be a sign of public interest in his cricket.

"I got into a little bit of a rabbit hole with scrutiny and social media when I was at the IPL. It didn't help me as a person on the field or off the field. I decided to, not stay away from social media, but also not go out of my way to look at it. On the other hand, I actually feel it's a little bit of a compliment if people are giving me scrutiny and have an opinion about my game. I know it's not a nice thing to see people slagging you off, but it means people care and people think I can put in a better performance than I have done that day," Brook said.

Honesty and self-awareness as a leader

On his personal qualities and approach to the game, Brook described himself as an honest person, both in his self-assessment and in his dealings with others. He acknowledged that his directness has sometimes created difficulties, but he views honesty as fundamental to his character. When supporters express frustration, he noted, he feels that frustration even more acutely himself.

Brook has been working on improving his ability to read match conditions and assess surfaces more quickly. He recognises that while he possesses the technical skill to play shots across the ground, he needs to develop faster decision-making in live matches to execute those shots more effectively. This remains an area of active focus in his development as a batter.

"It's something I've been really trying to work on, trying to assess conditions quicker, and read the surface better. To go out there knowing what shots are going to be hard and what is going to be easier. I have the ability to hit it everywhere, I just have to figure it out quicker in games," Brook said.

"Yeah, maybe. I'm definitely not the finished article and maybe never will be. I remember as a kid going to watch Baz play at Headingley for Warwickshire and Matthew Fisher got him out in his first over. I was absolutely devastated. I'd only gone to watch him. After he got out I said to my dad, 'Can we just go home'. I kind of understand it as a fan of cricket," he concluded.
