The University of Illinois announced a deal with Busey Bank in July, capitalizing on the NCAA’s new jersey patch rule—but the agreement extends far beyond the patches.

The jersey patch deal isn’t governed by its own contract. Instead, it’s a component of an overall sponsorship agreement between the parties worth $30 million in total, according to a copy of the contract obtained by Front Office Sports.

The 23-page agreement sheds light into how schools may be structuring their deals, especially those procured through multimedia rightsholder Learfield—and displays a level of transparency other schools have avoided.

Multiple universities have denied FOS requests for contracts governing jersey patch deals, claiming the schools are not parties on the contracts, which are brokered between Learfield, their MMR partner, and the sponsor. But Illinois’s agreement shows three parties: the university, Learfield, and Busey Bank.

The overall five-year sponsorship agreement began on July 1 and runs until June 30, 2031, per the deal. Busey Bank will pay Illinois $5 million annually, as well as a one-time $5 million signing bonus.

The contract details several categories of sponsorship assets, including the use of jersey patches. For football and men’s and women’s basketball, the patch will appear on the front of the “sideline apparel and uniform” for players and the head coach—it will also appear “as applicable” on the clothing of the offensive and defensive coordinators for football, as well as the assistant coaches in men’s and women’s basketball. The same goes for players and the head coach for soccer, volleyball, baseball, and softball. For men’s and women’s golf, specifically, patches will be “on the front or sleeves of the polo shirt” for players and the head coach.

The contract includes multiple mentions of exclusivity. Overall, the school is prohibited from engaging in sponsorship activities with companies considered competitors of Busey Bank, including offering jersey patches. The subsection on jersey patches specifically extends that exclusivity to all companies, not just financial services firms, meaning Busey will be the only brand with patches on these jerseys.

However, there’s an exception for a conference-wide jersey patch deal that the Big Ten strikes, suggesting how schools may handle league-wide deals in the future. (So far, the Big 12 is the only conference to do so.)

But the jersey patch is only one component of the deal.

The bank will receive the designation to be the “official financial services partner” of the Fighting Illini, receiving a litany of in-stadium and in-arena advertisements and in-game promotions, radio and audio advertisements, and digital advertising assets.

The brand will also receive a designated number of tickets for Illinois games across multiple sports including specifically designated tickets for football (97), men’s basketball (69), women’s basketball (18), and volleyball (8), as well as accompanying parking passes. In addition, the brand will receive luxury suites for football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball home games. Another perk: road trips. For football, men’s and women’s basketball, up to four Busey Bank “executives or guests” will receive travel, lodging, and tickets for one Big Ten conference road game each year.

The contract also includes perks for players.

One is related to NIL (name, image, and likeness) provisions, an increasingly common component of school sponsorship deals. During each year of the contract, Learfield will “facilitate six (6) student-athlete appearances,” though any NIL compensation will be outside the terms of the $30 million agreement. (Separately, while the contract includes an exclusivity clause preventing Illinois from partnering with competitors of Busey Bank, players are free to do so in their independent NIL deals.)

Another is related to job opportunities. Each year, Busey Bank will offer two “career pipeline placements” for athletes, including compensation.

Spokespeople for Illinois, Learfield, and Busey Bank did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
