Dillon Mitchell is unlikely to begin his rookie season with a prominent place in the Boston Celtics’ rotation. That does not mean the second-round pick should be forgotten.

The Celtics recently highlighted Mitchell in their “Five Facts” series, providing fans with a closer look at the 22-year-old forward whom Boston selected No. 40 overall in the 2026 NBA Draft. Mitchell signed a two-way contract with the organization on Aug. 5 after declining an opportunity to return to St. John’s.

His immediate path appears relatively clear. Mitchell likely will spend most of the 2026-27 season developing with the Maine Celtics in the G League while serving as emergency depth for Boston. His performance during NBA Summer League, however, demonstrated why he could eventually become much more than that.

Dillon Mitchell’s Defense Could Help Him Stand Out

Mitchell averaged 13 points, five rebounds, 2.7 steals and 1.3 blocks in 26 minutes per game over three Summer League appearances. His 2.7 steals per game established a Celtics Summer League record among players who appeared in at least three contests. Mitchell finished ahead of several notable names on the franchise leaderboard, including Marcus Smart, Rajon Rondo and Jaylen Brown.

He delivered his best performance against the Charlotte Hornets, recording 24 points and six steals in a Boston victory. That defensive production offers the clearest indication of what Mitchell could eventually provide at the NBA level.

At 6-foot-8 and 210 pounds, Mitchell possesses the size, length and athleticism to defend multiple positions. He can create turnovers, disrupt passing lanes and turn defensive stops into transition opportunities.

Those skills fit Boston’s preferred identity.

The Celtics already have established forwards ahead of Mitchell, including Jayson Tatum, Paul George and Sam Hauser. Mitchell therefore will not receive regular minutes simply because of where he was selected. He must prove that his energy and defensive versatility can help Boston in ways that do not require plays to be called for him.

Celtics Rookie Has Plenty Of Experience

Although Mitchell is beginning his professional career, he arrives with a varied basketball background. He played at Montverde Academy, which has produced numerous NBA players, and was ranked as the No. 5 overall prospect in the 2022 high school class. He spent his college career at Texas, Cincinnati and St. John’s before entering the draft.

Mitchell played his final college season under former Celtics head coach Rick Pitino. Pitino praised the forward’s basketball intelligence and described him as being “like having another coach on the floor.” That understanding of the game should help Mitchell adjust to Boston’s system and maximize his G League opportunities.

Mitchell’s offensive limitations remain the most significant question. He will need to improve as a shooter and half-court scorer before opposing defenses consistently respect him away from the basket.

Still, the Celtics do not need him to become a primary scoring option. They need Mitchell to defend, rebound, run the floor and make sound decisions. His two-way contract gives Boston time to develop those traits without rushing him into an NBA role. The majority of his early opportunities should come in Maine, where he can play significant minutes and expand his offensive game.

If injuries or rest create an opening on the Celtics’ bench, however, Mitchell has the physical tools to contribute immediately. His official roster position may be near the bottom entering training camp, but his defensive upside gives him a legitimate opportunity to become one of the organization’s most interesting young developmental players.
