Months after surveillance video captured a person breaking into NASCAR driver Greg Biffle’s home, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office shared a significant update on the investigation Tuesday.
Terrell Williams, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was charged in connection with the break-in at Biffle’s home, Sheriff Darren Campbell said.
The burglary happened soon after the December plane crash that killed Biffle, his wife Cristina and his two children. Craig Wadsworth, Dennis Dutton and Dutton’s son Jack were also on board and died in the crash.

Search warrants show suspicious activity began within hours of the crash. Investigators say there were immediate changes to financial account information and fraudulent transactions.
Less than a month later, investigators say thousands of dollars were stolen from Biffle’s home, including $30,000 in cash, guns and jewelry.
Security footage showed a suspect go into Biffle’s home. Investigators couldn’t identify anyone from the footage. They cannot confirm the person seen in the footage is Williams.
The break in the case came on July 29 when investigators in Cobb County, Georgia, contacted the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office about someone who was arrested in a separate burglary. It was a highly publicized homicide case.
Campbell said Williams used news headlines and social media posts to find his targets.
Investigators connected the two crimes because they found out the suspect had stolen items from Biffle’s home.
Detectives recovered a radio frequency detector, which is believed to have been used during the burglary at Biffle’s home. That device can be used to find cameras and wireless security equipment.
The suspect allegedly used this device while going through Biffle’s home, the sheriff said.
So, the investigation put Williams at Biffle’s residence at the time of the burglary.
Detectives also determined the suspect used cash stolen from Biffle’s home after the burglary to buy a car, which was seized in Georgia.
Other items recovered were tied to western North Carolina, including an officer’s firearm that was stolen three years ago, the sheriff said.
Williams faces several felonies, including second-degree burglary, and more. He is in jail without bond in Cobb County in connection with the burglary there.
There is also a white-collar fraud case that spreads across the country, Campbell said. There is a person of interest in that ongoing investigation.
