The five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) endured a disappointing start to the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, suffering a heavy eight-wicket defeat against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Guwahati. They will now look to bounce back strongly as they return to their fortress, the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where they face Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Friday, April 3. Playing in familiar conditions and in front of passionate home supporters could provide CSK the boost they need to regain momentum.

Here is the CSK's predicted XI against PBKS:

Top Order: Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Sanju Samson (WK), Ayush Mhatre

At the top of the order, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is expected to open alongside Sanju Samson, continuing their partnership from the previous match. Both batters struggled against RR’s pace attack but will aim to build a solid foundation this time. Youngster Ayush Mhatre is likely to slot in at No. 3, and a delayed entry could help him settle in better and contribute valuable runs.

Middle Order: Matthew Short, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton

The middle order features a mix of experience and power. Matthew Short and Jamie Overton provide overseas strength, with Overton impressing in the last match with a composed 43. Shivam Dube brings experience and hitting ability in the middle overs, while Kartik Sharma adds depth to the lineup. Together, they will aim to stabilise and accelerate the innings when required.

Bowlers: Noor Ahmad, Matt Henry, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed

In the bowling department, CSK appears relatively inexperienced. Matt Henry will look to recover after an expensive outing, while young Indian pacers Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed will be eager to showcase their potential. Afghan spinner Noor Ahmad will play a key role in the middle overs, aiming to break partnerships and control the run flow.

Chennai Super Kings predicted XI:

Ruturaj Gaikwad (C), Sanju Samson (WK), Ayush Mhatre, Matthew Short, Shivam Dube, Kartik Sharma, Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Matt Henry, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed

Impact Player: Sarfaraz Khan/Prashant Veer
