Do free agent signings come in waves? If so, Dallas Cowboys fans have a right to be excited after the team added future Hall of Famer and current NFL active sack leader Von Miller to its fold. Could someone else be on the way, too? Speculation now centers around a cornerback who has ties with defensive coordinator Christian Parker, as Adoree Jackson played for him last year in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, Dallas made room for Miller by waiving the player who probably had Dallas fans cursing in the fourth quarter of the exhibition win against Seattle. Turns out, some of the “stock down” reports were a precursor to Dallas cashing out. Here is what Dallas is doing. More: Camden Brown makes case for Dallas Cowboys roster in preseason game Is CB Adoree Jackson Dallas’ next addition? Do the Dallas Cowboys have another move to make this preseason after the signing of Von Miller? ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler thinks it's possible at another Dallas area of need, cornerback. Fowler posted on X: ”In addition to Von Miller, the Cowboys have explored cornerback help via free agency. One name to watch is Adoree Jackson, who was with DC Christian Parker in Philadelphia. Jackson has interest from a few teams, though.” The 10th-year pro spent last year with the Philadelphia Eagles, where Parker was Jackson’s defensive backs coach. He was on a one-year deal worth $5 million and finished the year with 55 total tackles, one interception, and 11 passes defended. Curiously, Dallas only lists one cornerback position on its official depth chart, where Cobie Durant and Shavon Revel Jr. share the top line. Dallas’ 3-4-4 defense includes two safeties and “DB,” where rookie safety Caleb Downs is listed as the starter. Dallas’ cornerback depth chart after Durant and Revel is Trikweze Bridges and Ameer Speed, who lack significant experience (though Speed does have a fortuitous name). Were the depth chart to include the other corner position, it would likely be in order DaRon Bland, Caelen Carson, Devin Moore and Josh Butler. DeMarcus Ware juiced for Von Miller In the aftermath of the Dallas Cowboys signing Miller, one of his old running buddies from the Denver Broncos, DeMarcus Ware, chimed in. Ware, an all-time great Cowboy from 2005-13 before finishing his career with the Broncos and retiring a decade ago, is tied with Miller with 138 1/2 career sacks. That is tied for 13th in NFL history, so Miller is likely to break that tie in a Cowboys jersey. At any rate, Ware is quite happy for his friend and made a video call to him to congratulate him. They had been keeping up through the offseason. "I can go all the way back to when we played the Broncos (in 2013), and I remember talking to Von after the game, and he's like, 'Man, it would be so cool to play for the Dallas Cowboys,'" Ware told ESPN, which caught up with him. “He kept saying, 'I think I'm going to the Dallas Cowboys.' He was over (near The Star) working out. He just felt like something was going to work out." As for what this means, "I don't think the Dallas Cowboys know how big of an opportunity this is for them, but not just them, for Von, too," Ware told ESPN. "For him, putting that jersey on, this is like icing on the cake. Like this is all he wanted. I know that's how he feels. "I know a lot of people might downplay it, but right now this dude is like a kid in the candy store." Cowboys make room for Von Miller The addition of edge rusher Miller meant someone had to go to make room on the 90-man preseason roster, and that someone was receiver Traeshon Holden. Holden’s preseason contribution was attempting to field a fourth-quarter punt inside his 5-yard line against the Seattle Seahawks, perhaps in a desperate attempt to make a play to make the team, but muffed it. The good news was Dallas then made a goal-line stand to effectively seal the preseason win. The bad news for Holden is that it was his final moment as a Cowboy. He was picked up by Dallas as an undrafted free agent out of Oregon last year, then was a final cut before signing and spending the year on the practice squad. This isn’t the first time things have gone wrong for Holden. In 2023, he was arrested on charges of felony unlawful use of a weapon and coercion and misdemeanor menacing and dismissed from Oregon. Shortly after those charges were dropped, he was essentially exonerated and reinstated to the Oregon football team. Dallas Cowboys next preseason game Dallas returns to action on Saturday, Aug. 22, when they play at the Arizona Cardinals. Kickoff is at 8 p.m. MT/9 p.m. CT on the NFL Network.
