In November 2025, Nick Coutracos posted his first video on his social media page “Nick Knows Ball“. Within days, NBA teams like the Brooklyn Nets began commenting on his videos. In Coutracos’ words, people have begun considering him the “arbiter of ball knowledge.”

This is the story of how relatability, consistency, and a hint of ball knowledge changed Coutracos’ life in a matter of months. This is the story behind Nick Knows Ball, one of the fastest-growing sports social media accounts in the world.

How It All Started

Coutracos couldn’t drop everything and start posting full-time content. During that fateful November, he began intentionally posting several times per day to build an audience. During the day, he worked as a New York City banker, but in his free time he uploaded NBA commentary.

“Idohavesomebackgroundwithsocialmedia,” Coutracos said. “SoI’vehadsportsaccountsthatIwouldgrowbackinhighschool, you know, thosesportseditaccounts.So Iwasoneofthosesportseditorsbackintheday.”

“IstartedonVine. Igrewapagecalled GAMETIME to250k [followers] whenIwas13yearsold. ThenonInstagram,IgrewapagecalledCatchesto1.2millionfollowers. IstartedthatwhenIwas15yearsold,soldthepagewhenIwas19,rightbeforeIgottocollege,andthen tookabriefhiatuswhenIwasinschool.”

Coutracos is clearly no stranger to creating social media content that people want to see. His experience gave him the knowledge he needed to cater to algorithms, so his videos were pushed out to thousands of viewers.

What started as interviews with NBA fans on the street has turned into a platform that has allowed him to quit his nine-to-five job as a banker. Coutracos now creates videos full-time with no plans on stopping.

Despite the rise to stardom, he still gives one prompt to almost every person he talks to: “Give me a niche NBA role player that proves you have elite ball knowledge.”

What exactly defines “ball knowledge” though?

Ball Knowledge Is Deeper than Names

Coutracos has gained such a tremendous following on social media that certain people he interviews come prepared with obscure player names. To Coutracos, though, ball knowledge is more than knowing the name of a former player; it’s knowing the impact they had on the game, no matter how small.

“AnyonecangoonGoogle,anyonecangoon Basketball Reference,seeafirstnameandalastname,andjustrememberit,andtheysay, ‘Yep,that’sballknowledge,'” Coutracos pointed out.

Naming the most obscure player in NBA history sounds great in theory. Coutracos, however, believes that the players that fans name had to have left their mark on the game in some way, shape, or form.

“Inmyopinion,trueballknowledgeisaguythathadsomewhatofanimpactontheleague,andsothatmightmeantheywereintheleaguefor3-5 yearsandhadsomewhatofanimpact.It’snotthemostobscureguy,butit’salsonotaguywhowasastarter, nor anall-starbyanymeans,” he shared.

Coutracos’ main piece of advice — should you come across him in the wild — is to never give him premeditated role players. More often than not, he can tell when a pull was prepared or off the top of one’s head.

Reflecting on His Journey

A quick ascension to fame can often lead influencers to forget where they came from and why they started creating content. The same cannot be said for Coutracos.

“ItrytoremindmyselfeverydaytojusttakeastepbackandbesoappreciativeofwhereI’matbecauseithasbeensuchaquickrisetosuccess,sotospeak. Idon’twanttoeverletthatgettomyhead,” he said.

In January, Coutracos was invited by the New York Knicks to one of their games. This led him to realize that the opportunities arising for him are a combination of living out his dreams and becoming an asset for NBA teams.

The main purpose of the invitation was to inspire his viewers to vote for Knicks players to participate in the 2026 NBA All-Star Game. He fulfilled his duties, but there was one more moment that night that changed everything.

“Thesamenightthat the Knicksinvitedmeouttothegame,IwasinterviewingStephonMarburyathalftime,” said Coutracos. “ThatwasthefirstinterviewthatIeverdid, andIwasfreakingoutleadinguptoit.”

The interview with Marbury, a two-time All-Star, was an incredible experience for him on a personal level as an NBA fan. It also gave him peace of mind that celebrities are regular people too. The conversation was one he wouldn’t soon forget and would be the first of many with NBA players and celebrities.

The Future of Sports Media

In a recent study from Stagwell Global, 62% of people they surveyed enjoy watching sports on social media more than on TV. While Coutracos’ content differs from sports highlights specifically, there may be reason to believe that sports fans prefer online news and opinions versus traditional media. Why might that be?

“There’sacertainleveloftrustthattheaverageviewerhasmoretowardsacreatorthan maybe a talkshowor anESPNsegment,andIthinkthat’sbecauseattheendoftheday,we’realsofans,” he said.

The barrier to entry on social media is less strict than that of national television. That means viewers have the opportunity to hear from more up and coming voices in the sports world and many more points of view.

“YougoonTikTok,yougoonInstagram,yougoonthesesocialmedia.Youdon’tknowwhatyou’regonnaget. That’swhyanotherreasonwhyviewerstendtogravitatemoretowards[social media]isthat youcouldbehitwithanideaorathoughtthatyou’veneverevenseenbefore,deliveredina waythatyou’veneverseenbefore,” he added.

Coutracos knows that the videos he creates aren’t just representative of his experiences talking sports with his friends, but of friendships around the world. He decided to turn his late-night sports conversations into the focus of his social media page.

“ThestuffthatItalkaboutisprettymuchthesameconversationsthatalotofguyslikemeandyouhavewithourfriendswhenwe’rejusthangingoutateachother’shouses, or inourbasements,” he expressed.

The Biggest Advice for Aspiring Content Creators

Many kids and adults alike dream of becoming famous online, but aspirations can only become reality by putting in work. Oftentimes, people don’t know where to start and give up before they even begin. Coutracos has mastered the art of social media and has some words of wisdom for aspiring creators.

“ThisissomethingthatIstruggledwithwhenIfirststartedposting: beyourmostauthenticself,” he said. “Youshouldnevertrytobesomeonethatyou’renot. Ithinkit’sgreattotakeinspirationfromotherpeopleandothercreators,butyoushouldnevertryandcompletelymimictheirstylebecauseeveryonehasadifferentpersonality.”

Coutracos and so many other influencers have found their niches, and their follower counts have soared. What worked for them, however, may not work for everyone. Thankfully, just like fingerprints and snowflakes, no two brains work the same. There are infinite content ideas if you know where to look.

“Dropallfearofjudgmentthatyoumightgetfromotherpeople, becausewhenyoupostonline, youhavetoacceptthechancethat yourcoworkersmightseeit, yourbossmightseeit, yourfamilymembersmightseeit,” he explained. “Attheendoftheday, ifitmakesyouhappyandyouareproudofwhatyou’reputtingoutthere, youshouldhavenoreasontostoportohinder thevolumeatwhichyou wanttopost orwhatyouwanttoshare.”

Does Nick Really Know Ball?

It wouldn’t be an interview with Coutracos if he wasn’t asked the question he gives his interviewees. As for a niche role player, he named not one, but two that he grew up watching on the Boston Celtics.

“IwasblessedwiththeopportunitytowatchSemihErdenandLukeHarangodyontheBostonCeltics,” he answered. “LukeHarangody was a smallforward, andSemihErden was a center and a seven-footer.Ithinktheyplayedtwoyearsintheleague,andtheywerebothpackagedupinatrade in2011 toCleveland.”

That answer officially proves that he has elite ball knowledge, in case you needed any more confirmation.

Coutracos Never Settles

Coutracos has posted daily since the first day he decided to upload a sports commentary video, a decision that he claims “changed [his] life.” With new opportunities, he’s leveled up his content and shows no signs of stopping. After all, he’s living out his dream job: talking about basketball all day, every day.

Looking to follow Coutracos’s work? Search “Nick Knows Ball” on all social media platforms, and his page will show up.

Who knows? Maybe one day you’ll meet him and he’ll ask you to prove you have elite ball knowledge.
