Sunil Gavaskar has called for full transparency in Indian Premier League trades, highlighting a significant gap in the league's public disclosure practices. The cricket legend has raised concerns about how the IPL currently handles the financial details of player transactions between franchises, arguing that the lack of visibility creates uncertainty about salary cap compliance across the league.

Gavaskar pointed out that while player transfers between franchises are made public, the financial figures involved in trades remain confidential. He explained the distinction between transfers and trades and why both should be disclosed to maintain competitive integrity.

"...there's some speculation in the media about the possible switching of players from one franchise to another. There's, of course, still some time before that window closes. However, while the transfer of a player from one franchise to another is in the public domain, when a trade takes place, the numbers are known only to the two franchises, the player and the BCCI," Gavaskar wrote on his column Mid-Day.

Why trade numbers should be made public

The absence of public trade figures creates a competitive disadvantage for franchises attempting to monitor salary cap compliance. Without access to trade values, rival franchises cannot independently verify whether all teams are operating within their allocated financial limits. This structural gap in transparency affects the competitive balance of the league and raises questions about the integrity of financial regulations.

The IPL's transparency challenge

Gavaskar emphasised that the IPL's credibility depends on maintaining full transparency in all player transactions. He stressed that concealing trade numbers leaves other franchises unable to assess whether salary cap rules are being followed consistently across the league.

"In such a situation, the other franchises don't know whether the salary cap that every franchise has for its squad was maintained or breached. That's why it's important for full transparency that the numbers are also made public," Gavaskar wrote.

The cricket legend further argued that the IPL's global standing requires complete openness in its financial dealings. He expressed concern that the lack of transparency could invite criticism from those outside the league who question its regulatory standards.

"The IPL is the greatest T20 league in the world and it's therefore crucial that full transparency is maintained so that there's no finger-pointing at it from those jealous of it," Gavaskar concluded.
