The Cumberland County high school football jamboree had an unconventional ending at Jack Britt on Friday night.
After a series of fights and a stampede of fans running in the same direction and jumping fences, as the Cape Fear vs. Overhills game concluded, the Jack Britt administration instructed referees to pause the final game that included Jack Britt vs. Westover.
The skirmish began with less than two minutes remaining in the Cape Fear vs. Overhills game, leading to confusion among the players and on-field staff, and a game-clock run-off to end the game.
On the third play of the final game, the crowd of fights grew as the police presence began to grow to stop the fights, causing about a 20-minute stoppage to the game to force the fans to evacuate the stadium to contain the ruckus.
After the departure of the fans, parents were allowed to remain in the stadium to continue to support their athletes to conclude the jamboree.
