The Jacksonville Jaguars returned home from New Orleans and held training camp practice No. 14 on Aug. 17 at the Miller Electric Center. Practice observations include drops, no Nick Mullens and coach Liam Coen's plans for playing starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence at Aug. 21 in the second preseason game vs. the Carolina Panthers. Liam Coen and his plans for Panthers game Jaguars coach Liam Coen said that he was "trending" towards playing some of the starters against the Panthers at EverBank Stadium (7:30 p.m., CBS). He was asked specifically about QB1 Trevor Lawrence. "I think that's the goal right now is to look at potentially playing him a little Friday night," Coen said. "You just look at the amount of padded days that we actually have left until the game week, and it's very few and far between. So you set a schedule, you set it, and you're like, well, timing and circumstances, things change. "And when you have to pivot a little bit, and I think we need a little bit more work in terms of coming off of the Saints joint [practice] and the Saints game. I think we just need a little bit more padded work against each other, good on good. Can't really do it today. We had to pivot a little bit. So like to maybe see these guys Friday night go out there, get a couple drives potentially."
Player attendance Mullens out: Mullens, who had a subpar game against New Orleans (he departed with the Jags trailing 20-6 and completed only 3 of 7 passes for 33 yards) did not practice, the first time one of the four quarterbacks has missed a camp session. Mullens came onto the field late in practice during an 11-on-11 team period, watching while wearing a baseball cap and shorts and holding a play sheet. Coen said Mullens was "dinged" in the preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, will not practice on Aug. 18 and might get some snaps in the joint practice Aug. 19 against Carolina.
"Maybe Wednesday if he's feeling better," Coen said. "But yeah, more precautionary. Just trying to let it slow down, let it chill out and give these other guys some reps too. We got to get Carter and Joey some more reps and when Nick's able to go, we'll get him back out there." Walker Little back: OT/OG Walker Little was in pads and practiced with the offensive lineman during individual drills, but did not compete in team periods. ... CB Jourdan Lewis and OT Cole Van Lanen worked on the side. ... TE Quintin Morris and WR Trebor Pena wore the orange "no contact" practice jerseys but still competed. ... LB Jack Kiser remained on the sideline with a knee injury. Not spotted on the field: OT Geron Christian Sr., OG Patrick Mekari and LB Jalen McLeod. In Christian's case, it might well have been a veteran's day off. He was the only Jaguar to play every offensive snap (61) against the Saints and he's an eight-year player. ... OT Chuma Edoga, injured against the Saints, was not at practice. Coen said he's optimistic Edoga could be back before the season starts. In the meantime, RG Ezra Cleveland got all of the team's 11-on-11 snaps at right tackle. Injured during practice: RB LeQuint Allen Jr., was being attended to by trainers after a running back drill, appearing to have cramps or an abdomen issue. He did not compete in the team periods but was seen running vigorously in place. Big plays WR Jakobi Meyers made a fingertip catch of a Lawrence pass, in traffic over the middle, with Eric Murray as the primary defender.
CB Montaric Brown had an outstanding period in a 7-on-7 red-zone possession, breaking up a Lawrence pass intended for Brian Thomas Jr., and making two tackles, on Parker Washington and Thomas, to keep them out of the end zone. Jaguars season ticket information RB Bhayshul Tuten bobbled a Lawrence pass right into the hands of LB Dennis Gardeck, who went down the sideline untouched. The play might have been blown dead on a sack before Lawrence got rid of it. DE Travon Walker blew up a screen pass to Chris Rodriguez by running through Meyers, attempting to block. Walker outweights Meyers by 72 pounds. Thumbs up In addition to Gardeck's interception, the defense has pass break-ups by Brown, CB Devon Marshall, CB Travis Hunter and LB Ventrell Miller. CB Preston Hodge got a break-up but he dropped what would have been another interception. Thumbs down The offense had one of its worst days in terms of drops but the quarterbacks weren't exactly on target either. Tuten had a drop before his bobble to Gardeck, and other drops were by Washington, Morris and Hunter. ... Lawrence, who took every snap in 11-on-11 periods, was 6 of 18 and completed only 1 of his first seven. ... Carter Bradley and Joey Aguilar combined to complete 4 of 7 passes in 7-on-7 periods. Up next for the Jaguars The team will practice on Aug. 18 and then go through a joint practice with the Carolina Panthers on Aug. 19 (all tickets have been distributed). The Jaguars will play the Panthers in preseason game No. 2 on Aug. 21 at EverBank Stadium (7:30 p.m., CBS).
