A horrible mix-up between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul occurred during the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at Galle International Cricket Stadium on August 15, 2026. The incident unfolded on the final ball of the 11th over as Rahul faced Keshara Nuwantha. Rahul nudged the ball towards the leg side and looked to rotate the strike, but the situation quickly descended into confusion at the crease.

As Rahul attempted to complete the run, Jaiswal lost his balance after a minor bump with the bowler, which distracted him from tracking his partner's movement. The young batter had no awareness of the situation developing and found himself falling short of the crease. Jaiswal was run out for 32 off 37 balls, ending an innings that had shown promise during India's first-innings batting effort.

"I think that was a run. KL Rahul is going to make his end quite comfortably; it’s just that Jaiswal seemed to be lost in his own world," Manjrekar said on air as quoted by Hindustan Times.

How the mix-up unfolded

The dismissal highlighted the importance of clear communication and awareness between batting partners, particularly in high-pressure Test cricket situations. Such mix-ups, though rare at the international level, can prove costly when they result in the loss of a well-set batter. The incident served as a reminder of the mental demands placed on cricketers operating in tandem at the crease, where split-second decisions and mutual understanding determine the outcome of each run-scoring opportunity.

What happened in the morning session of Day 1?

The Test match began with the Indian team opting to bat first. Apart from the Jaiswal run out, the visitors looked quite comfortable in the middle. Rahul played with a cautious approach while Jaiswal took the attack early on. Following the opener's unfortunate dismissal, the India vice-captain was joined by his Karnataka compatriot Devdutt Padikkal.

At the end of the first session, India managed to put up 101 runs on the board, having lost a solitary wicket in 27 overs. At the time of writing, Rahul (32*) and Padikkal (35*) are batting at the crease.
