Australia have axed Jake Weatherald and brought Matt Renshaw into their 13-player squad for the second Test against Bangladesh, to be played in Mackay. It is the only personnel change from the group that suffered a heavy defeat in Darwin.

Weatherald managed 23 in the first innings and a duck in the second, leaving his overall record at 224 runs from six matches at an average of 20.36 since he featured throughout last season's Ashes. The squad arrangement had formally covered both Tests from the outset of the series, yet the selectors moved quickly after the Darwin result.

Renshaw, who will be appearing in his 15th Test if he takes the field, last represented Australia at this level in 2023. He had been kept on standby ahead of the series, spending time with the squad during a preparatory camp in Brisbane before the Tests began.

Why did Weatherald's technique fail to hold up against Bangladesh?

Weatherald used the county cricket off-season to refine his batting method, and the adjustments were evident in Darwin. He could not find his footing in either innings, nicking a drive to the cordon off Hasan Mahmud on day one and then dragging a delivery onto his stumps from the same bowler when Australia batted again.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald, speaking before the selection announcement was made, acknowledged the visible changes to Weatherald's approach.

"Yeah, there was some change to Jake in terms of where he lined up and his movement patterns. It's always hard to critique small sample sizes, whether it holds up. Drag one on, drove a one in the first innings and was dismissed. So it's probably harder with that smaller sample size to say, yep, that's going to hold up under pressure," said McDonald as quoted by Cricinfo.

Weatherald, who received a central contract from Cricket Australia in 2026, had spoken candidly about the pressure on him before the series.

"You are required to make runs all the time. I've got a good opportunity to play two games, hopefully, and make runs, get four innings to do that. If I don't do that then I put fate in someone else's hands," said Weatherald.

What does Renshaw's return reveal about Australia's opening problem?

Renshaw's Sheffield Shield numbers from last season were compelling where he finished with an average of 49.90 and three centuries. He has also broken into Australia's white-ball setup, joining the T20 World Cup squad as a replacement for Matt Short. His Test record stands at an average of 29.31, with a career-best 184 against Pakistan made in early 2017.

The recall underlines how unsettled Australia's top order has been since David Warner's retirement in early 2024. Excluding Usman Khawaja, who was an established opener before his final England series, seven different batters have been asked to fill the role. Travis Head moved into the position during the Ashes when Khawaja was injured in Perth and has remained there, while Steven Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Marnus Labuschagne and Weatherald have all been deployed alongside him.

Labuschagne, who made 1 and 31 in Darwin and was dismissed in the second innings missing a full delivery from Taijul Islam, has kept his place but faces scrutiny in Mackay. The selectors have not moved to introduce uncapped options such as Ollie Peake or Campbell Kellaway, despite that approach being publicly backed by Ricky Ponting. Josh Inglis remains as a spare batting option, Scott Boland provides fast-bowling cover, and a frontline spinner is expected to be required at the Mackay venue after Hazlewood claimed seven wickets in Darwin.
