East Lansing — Michigan State knew Jaxon Kohler wouldn't be on the roster this coming season, but an extra season of eligibility means he'll be suiting up for someone else. Kohler, who played four years at Michigan State and proved a major piece of the frontcourt as a floor-stretching dynamo, is entering the transfer portal. He gained a year of eligibility through a Colorado injunction in July that gave his entire 2022 recruiting class a fifth year.
Kohler averaged 12.5 points and 8.9 rebounds last season while shooting 38.9% from 3-point range and 50.0% from the floor. But Michigan State added freshman Ethan Taylor and transfer Anton Bonke to fill two vacancies up front. The roster is already finished. Kohler closed out his Michigan State career with 872 points and 728 rebounds to go with 108 assists, along with three Sweet 16 appearances and an Elite Eight. And, one heck of a memory. His senior day celebration also saw his great grandfather, Earl Jay "Chuck" Kohler — one of 12 living Pearl Harbor veterans — honored pregame as the veteran of the game. Kohler and fellow classmate Carson Cooper were instrumental in a two-year turnaround for Michigan State when they became upperclassmen. A Michigan State program that had faded to the middle of the pack in the Big Ten won the conference championship in 2024-25 and put together a 57-15 record over the past two seasons, the fourth-best win percentage over any two-year stretch in program history. “I love those guys just about more than anybody,” Tom Izzo said of Kohler and Cooper after a Sweet 16 loss to UConn. “Because everybody can leave now. Hell, everybody can leave. So they stood strong. Never did we even think about them leaving. And they got better, and we got better.” Neither Izzo, Kohler nor his classmates may have expected this fifth year of eligibility, but the injunction allows Kohler to come back and play another year of college ball. That may help his professional prospects after playing for his hometown Utah Jazz in the NBA Summer League. cearegood@detroitnews.com @ConnorEaregood This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Jaxon Kohler enters transfer portal, leaves Michigan State for 5th year
