While J.J. McCarthy is no longer competing with Kyler Murray for the Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback job, that has not diminished his belief in the player he can become in the NFL.

With Murray officially named Minnesota’s starter, McCarthy is entering a different phase of his development. Rather than focusing on winning the job, the former first-round pick is concentrating on continuing to improve, supporting his teammates and making sure he is prepared whenever his opportunity comes.

McCarthy said he is “really proud of his development” so far and remains confident that he is a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL.

“I’m always gonna have that confidence in myself,” McCarthy said. “But at this time, it’s doing whatever I can for the team and being ready when my numbers called. That’s all that matters, and that’s all I can control.”

That perspective is important for a young signal caller who has already experienced an unconventional start to his professional career, and even though Murray has been named the starter, McCarthy can still benefit from the situation.

Murray brings years of experience to Minnesota, giving McCarthy an opportunity to learn from a veteran who has already navigated the challenges that come with playing the position at the highest level.

McCarthy also spoke on his relationship with Murray, making it clear that he respects him and will do whatever the team needs him to in order to succeed.

“He’s just one of my teammates that I care for and respect,” McCarthy said. “Just like all of my teammates in that locker room. It’s about just doing whatever I can for the (QB) room and this team and moving forward.”

That mentality could be valuable for both McCarthy and the Vikings. Rather than allowing the change in his role to become a distraction, McCarthy can use the season to continue developing behind Murray while gaining additional experience within Kevin O’Connell’s offense.

At the same time, his confidence remains intact. There is a significant difference between accepting a backup role and believing that you are incapable of becoming a starter. McCarthy’s comments suggest he still believes his own opportunity will eventually come.

For now, McCarthy’s responsibility is straightforward: continue developing, support the quarterback room and remain ready for his opportunity. He appears comfortable understanding that distinction while maintaining a healthy mindset and believing in his ability to eventually become a franchise quarterback in the NFL—whether in Minnesota, or elsewhere.
