Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was back in action on Thursday night for the first game of preseason against the Detroit Lions.

Despite the risk of playing the starters in a meaningless preseason game, Burrow still played a number of snaps at quarterback.

Having completed 5 of 6 throws against the Lions, Burrow was also sacked, which will have worried a number of fans.

However, speaking after the game, Burrow wanted to give some praise on wide receiver Dohnte Meyers, who signed with the Bengals back in January.

Meyers ended the game with more receiving yards than any other Bengals player – albeit only 29 yards – from three receptions.

Burrow admitted Meyers is someone who has seriously impressed him this offseason.

What has impressed Joe Burrow so much about Bengals WR Dohnte Meyers

Burrow is not short of options at wide receiver with arguably the best duo in the league in Ja’marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

There is always room for an added surprise to emerge out of training camp and it seems Burrow has found a strong connection with Meyers.

Speaking to the media after the game, Burrow shared his excitement over the 26-year-old former CFL receiver.

“Number one, he just loves ball. The week before training camp, I texted him: “Hey, are you in town?” said Burrow.

“He’s like, “I can be.” And I was like, “Can you be here tomorrow at 11?” He’s like, “Yeah.”

“Come to find out, he drove from Atlanta that night to be there to throw the next day. That’s the kind of guy that he is.

“He’s had a great camp. He’s quick, shifty, and understands what we’re trying to do. He played a lot in the CFL, and though he comes over here and hasn’t played a lot in the NFL, he’s got a lot of reps under his belt. He’s a guy that we’ve seen a lot out of.”

Meyers is going to have to continue to prove himself if he wants to earn himself a spot on the Bengals’ 53-man roster ahead of the new season.

However, it is clear to see that there may still be a role for Meyers on the Bengals’ practice squad at the very least, given the dedication he has shown that has really impressed Burrow.

There are still two more preseason games for Meyers to prove his worth to Burrow and Zac Taylor, but Thursday was a positive step for the wideout.
