The New Orleans Saints finally got their first taste of competition outside their own building Thursday morning. Unfortunately, the biggest takeaway may have been watching first-round receiver Jordyn Tyson leave the field early.

Tyson exited the Saints’ Aug. 13 joint practice with the Jacksonville Jaguars after sustaining an apparent leg injury. Reuters reported he walked off with a trainer, while subsequent reports characterized the issue as involving his hamstring. As of Thursday afternoon, the Saints had not announced a definitive diagnosis or timetable for his return.

That last part is important.

There is no reason to turn an August injury into a September crisis before the medical information arrives. But considering Tyson's history — and how much New Orleans has invested in him — there is every reason to pay attention.

The Hamstring Was Already Part of the Conversation

The Saints knew exactly what they were getting when they selected Tyson eighth overall in April. Talent was never the question, but rather availability was.

Tyson missed four games during his final season at Arizona State Sun Devils football because of a hamstring injury. He still finished 2025 with 61 receptions for 711 yards and eight touchdowns and earned first-team All-Big 12 and AP third-team All-America honors. Over his college career, Tyson caught 158 passes for 2,282 yards and 22 touchdowns.

His medical history extended beyond the hamstring. Tyson dealt with significant knee, collarbone and ankle injuries during college, which made durability one of the primary concerns surrounding him entering the draft. New Orleans nevertheless saw enough talent to make him the No. 8 pick.

I still understand why.

Tyson Gives This Offense Something It Needed

Tyson isn't simply another receiver competing for targets. He's supposed to become one of the foundational pieces around quarterback Tyler Shough.

At 6-foot-2 and 203 pounds, Tyson gives the Saints a receiver capable of lining up in multiple spots, creating separation and attacking the football at the catch point. Head coach Kellen Moore praised that versatility immediately after the draft, specifically pointing to Tyson's ability to play outside or from the slot.

Pair that skill set with Chris Olave, and suddenly Shough has two receivers capable of stressing a secondary in different ways.

That's the vision.

Thursday was an uncomfortable reminder that realizing that vision requires Tyson to stay available.

New Orleans Has Been Managing Him Carefully

This isn't a situation where the Saints ignored the warning signs.

New Orleans deliberately limited Tyson during portions of the offseason. Before training camp opened July 29, Moore said the rookie would be available but that the team planned to gradually increase his workload because he hadn't participated extensively during organized team activities. That approach made sense then. It makes even more sense now.

The Saints have a preseason game Saturday against Jacksonville, followed by joint practices with the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams before their second preseason game Aug. 22.

If there is any doubt about Tyson's hamstring, I don't need to see him Saturday.

Not one snap. Preseason repetitions are valuable. Having your eighth-overall pick healthy when New Orleans visits the Detroit Lions on Sept. 13 is considerably more valuable.

The Other Young Receivers Could Benefit

Tyson missing practice or preseason time would create additional opportunities for the rest of New Orleans' young receiver room.

The Saints didn't stop drafting receivers after Tyson. They selected North Dakota State's Bryce Lance in the fourth round and LSU speedster Barion Brown in the sixth. Moore praised the athleticism of all three following rookie minicamp.

This is where those extra draft investments become important.

Nobody should expect Lance or Brown to replace what New Orleans believes Tyson can eventually become. But preseason football is built for young players taking advantage of unexpected repetitions.

If Tyson rests, somebody else's audition gets longer.

My Two Pennies

Don't panic. But don't pretend this is meaningless either.

Tyson's hamstring was one of the biggest concerns attached to him before the draft. When the same general area becomes an issue during his first NFL training camp, it's naturally going to raise eyebrows.

That doesn't mean the Saints made a mistake drafting him. It means they need to remember why they handled him carefully in the first place. New Orleans didn't draft Jordyn Tyson eighth overall to win August.

They drafted him to help Tyler Shough and this offense win Sundays for years. If protecting that investment means Tyson spends Saturday afternoon standing on the sideline in a Saints cap instead of catching preseason passes, I'm perfectly fine with it.

The Saints need to find out how good Jordyn Tyson can become.

First, they have to keep him on the field.
