ESPN went through another culling of their talent roster this summer with widespread layoffs once again. But among all the names that will no longer be seen on the worldwide leader in sports, one of the most shocking was Karl Ravech.

Ravech has been a fixture at ESPN for over three decades. While he was a SportsCenter anchor for much of his tenure, he will be mostly remembered for his presence on the network’s baseball coverage. Ravech was the longtime host of Baseball Tonight for many years. Sadly, ESPN’s nightly roundup show across the Major Leagues finally succumbed to the changing tides of the industry. In recent years, he also served as ESPN’s lead MLB play-by-play voice on the Sunday Night Baseball franchise. That too is no longer airing on ESPN after being an institution for years, transitioning to NBC.

But given Ravech’s lengthy tenure and status at the network, it was still a shock to see him let go. And the manner in which it happened, where he was informed by a reporter seeking comment before hearing from ESPN directly, left a bad taste in everyone’s mouth. Former ESPN star Dan Patrick blasted his former home for not treating Ravech with more dignity and handling the layoffs poorly.

But one person we have not heard from regarding the decision is Karl Ravech himself. Until now.

Ravech appeared on Westwood One Sports Night with Josh Graham to address the situation. And he took the high road in talking about the situation, saying he was overwhelmed by the messages of support.

“It’s sort of apparent what’s happened there.”

When asked about the headlines regarding his future at ESPN, Karl Ravech says he has “no ill-will” towards the network.

“That’s been surreal. I haven’t really commented on it much. I think it’s sort of apparent what’s happened there. I certainly have literally no ill-will to a company that’s provided me with a life that has exceeded any expectation I had coming out of Needham High School or Ithaca College and the experiences I’ve had. There’s no question, to read about these things, has been surreal,” Ravech said.

“I think the most surreal part has been the notes of gratitude, the notes of frustration that I’ve received in the process, all of those things when you’re doing what we do you never, ever think about the impact that you’ve had on people. I’ll be honest with you, that part has been so overwhelming and gratifying and heartwarming. That’s really the overriding emotion that I have at this point.”

Surprisingly, Karl Ravech was back on ESPN airwaves shortly after being laid off. To show what a consummate professional he is, he chose to finish assignments this month in calling MLB games and working the upcoming Little League World Series, which he says is his favorite assignment and something he is looking forward to.

“Can’t wait to get to the Little League World Series because it’s obviously the event that most people associate me with. At least it’s got a baseball in it. And they know it’s long been my favorite event for every reason people love the game of baseball. That is why I love the game of baseball. It’s represented in the Little Leaguers. And to get the chance to do it one more time and to share that with all the people that watch and the people who work with me, I couldn’t ask for a more welcome opportunity.”

Karl Ravech would have been justified in acting aggrieved in how his departure from ESPN transpired, both privately and publicly. With both Ravech and Linda Cohn leaving Bristol, it’s fair that sports fans feel like the golden era of ESPN is coming to an end. But even in his final days, he remains as one of the best ambassadors the network has ever had and a reminder of what ESPN can be at its finest.
