Two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant has won nearly everything the league offers: a regular-season MVP, two Finals MVPs, and a pair of rings with the Golden State Warriors. So when the Houston Rockets forward ranked those honors against each other, people paid attention.

Durant picked a side that many fans will find hard to accept, arguing individual recognition outweighs the sport's ultimate team prize.

Kevin Durant explains why MVP outranks championship ring

The comments came during an appearance on the Unguarded podcast, where Durant was asked which honor carries more weight for a top player. His answer leaned entirely on rarity and personal control rather than team success.

“There’s one a year, I don’t give a f*ck what nobody say, rings are incredible, it’s a great team accomplishment but c'mon, everybody wants to be MVP,” Durant said.

He argued that with 30 teams and only one MVP trophy, the award separates itself from a title that an entire roster, including bench players, gets to claim.

Durant's larger point centered on control. He said a championship depends on teammates, coaching, health and matchups falling into place, while an MVP campaign rests far more on what a player does himself.

Durant own resume fuels championship versus MVP debate

Durant won his only MVP in 2014 with the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 32 points a game that season. He later joined a 73-win Golden State Warriors team in 2016, a decision that still shapes how critics view his two championships and Finals MVP awards from 2017 and 2018.

That history is part of why the debate resurfaced so quickly, with fans split online over whether a player who chose a stacked roster should downplay how much control goes into winning a ring.

Durant, now 37 and no longer an MVP contender, has not finished higher than fifth in the voting since 2016. His comments read more like a reflection on what he values most from a long career.
