It looks like Nick Bosa's extended absence due to knee tendinitis will come to an end after the San Francisco 49ers' second preseason game vs. the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan on Tuesday after the team's joint practice with the Chargers told reporters that running back Christian McCaffrey would've returned Tuesday if it wasn't a joint practice. That puts him on track to be back for Saturday's practice − their first after Thursday's game. Shanahan said Bosa is on a similar trajectory. "He's making a lot of progress," Shanahan said. "He's got a lot less irritation, soreness, tendinitis, whatever you want to call it, than he had last week. He's going the right direction and I see him similar to Christian." Bosa has missed more than two weeks of camp with what the team initially referred to as "soreness." Shanahan later confirmed that soreness was due to tendinitis in the same knee that Bosa suffered a torn ACL in last season. Getting Bosa back with a week left in the preseason would give him three weeks to ease back in and ramp up for the regular season opener on Sept. 10. A more ideal scenario would've been one where Bosa was in practice for all of camp, but a return Saturday is significantly better than a return the week the regular season begins. The question wasn't whether Bosa would return this year. That always seemed to be the likeliest scenario. The question now is whether Bosa is able to stave off additional soreness once the regular season begins.
