Since Kyler Murray was named the Minnesota Vikings’ starting quarterback, he appears to be bringing out a different level of confidence as the team moves through training camp.
The veteran has reportedly looked increasingly comfortable operating Minnesota’s offense. Jason Harmon of Sleeper NFL highlighted the quarterback’s recent performances, noting that there are reasons for optimism surrounding Murray as he prepares for the upcoming season.
“Murray’s performance since being named the team’s starter may be cause for a healthy level of optimism,” Harmon said. “Murray continues to operate the offense with impressive conviction, especially considering he was splitting first-team reps with J.J. McCarthy until Tuesday. He looks like a QB who’s been operating this offense for years, even though he’s brand new.”
That adjustment is particularly notable considering how recently Murray took full control of the first-team offense. For much of camp, Murray and McCarthy had been splitting opportunities with the starters as the Vikings evaluated their quarterback situation. With Murray now officially in position to lead the offense, he has seemingly responded by playing with a greater sense of freedom.
Murray has been described as playing “completely loose” since the decision was made, with a noticeable shift in both his confidence and body language. Those changes could be just as important as the physical aspects of his performance.
Murray entered Minnesota with the challenge of learning a new offensive system while competing for the starting job. Although he has extensive experience, the Vikings' offense is a new environment for the veteran quarterback. Building chemistry with his new teammates and becoming comfortable within the system were always going to be major parts of his transition.
The early signs suggest that process is moving in a positive direction. Rather than looking like a quarterback still trying to find his footing, Murray has reportedly carried himself with the decisiveness expected from someone who has already established himself within an offense.
That is especially encouraging for Minnesota because the team invested in Murray with the expectation that he could provide stability and experience at the position.
The Vikings still have plenty of work ahead before the regular season begins, and training camp performances ultimately have to translate when the games count. Murray will also have to continue developing chemistry with Minnesota’s offensive personnel while proving that his current level of play can be sustained.
Still, the shift in confidence since being named the starter is difficult to overlook.
