On Tuesday, August 11, as the Minnesota Vikings began prepping for their first preseason game, head coach Kevin O’Connell announced that Kyler Murray will be the team’s starting quarterback.

Murray won out in a competition that had been held since spring against Vikings 2024 first-round pick J.J. McCarthy.

Each of Murray’s first three seasons in the NFL were rewarded with Pro Bowl honors. He made himself known with dazzling playmaking ability on the ground and through the air. His highlights featured explosive scrambles and big-time throws out of structure.

Vikings fans and reporters are excited about the potential for those dynamic abilities to translate to Minnesota’s offense. However, Murray and O’Connell both emphasized that Murray’s understanding, timing, and accuracy within structure were more responsible for his earning the starting job than his freestyling.

The Vikings appear confident that Murray can operate the offense the way O’Connell hopes from within the pocket, while still bringing a rare ability to turn broken plays into something more.

What Did Kevin O’Connell See From Kyler Murray in Training Camp?

Kevin O’Connell says Kyler Murray has shown enough for them to project what he could look like in their offense and it’s time to let him build a “comfort level.”

One of the first questions O’Connell fielded from reporters on Tuesday was about Murray’s mobility and what impact that had on his position with the team.

“That’s a part of it, but he’s also demonstrated rhythm, timing, anticipation, and getting through progressions,” O’Connell said.

He expressed confidence in Murray’s decision-making and ability to keep the Vikings on schedule.

“It’s going to be about protecting the football,” O’Connell stressed. “It’s well-documented that we win a lot of football games when we break even, or better, in that margin and our quarterback has a clear role in that amongst all 11 on offense.”

The statistics have backed that up throughout O’Connell’s tenure in Minnesota. In his first four seasons with the Vikings, the team is35-5 when they don’t lose the turnover battle — an 87.5 percent win rate. In contrast, the Vikings are 8-22 in O’Connell’s tenure when they have more turnovers than their opponent.

Murray’s understanding of the offense struck O’Connell as the competition progressed.

“There’s comfort from Kyler in the scheme,” O’Connell explained. “He had some really high-completion days where he was able to show some really good understanding of putting the ball in play, playing with great timing and rhythm. You guys have seen him be explosive when there’s opportunities there. But you’ve also seen him check the ball down, put the ball in play, and get us from a 1st-and-10 to a 2nd-and-3.”

He added that as Murray’s processing of their system set in, they became convinced Murray can carry out their vision.

“Some of those things bode really well for his role now as we lock in.”

While Murray’s escapability allows him to create when his first options are shut down, his ability to play on time and keep the offense moving forward stood out to O’Connell in training camp more so than explosive playmaking.

Vikings Still Believe in J.J. McCarthy’s Future

JJ McCarthy’s future with the Vikings remains optimistic, per @WillRagatz.

The Vikings saw an opportunity to take a swing at their next franchise quarterback when selecting McCarthy 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. McCarthy was a polarizing prospect as a quarterback who played in a system that did not rely heavily upon him. Still, his youth, athletic tools, and knack for stepping up when the title-clinching Michigan Wolverines needed him most was enough to sell Minnesota on the vision.

“Nothing changes as far as J.J. being an incredibly important member of our quarterback room and our team,” O’Connell said. “We need to make sure of the original intent of what all of this was. We feel we’re on our way to doing that with a lot of work to go still.”

But while the long-term vision appeared bright for McCarthy, the timeline for the rest of Minnesota’s roster is now. With Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison leading a talented receiving corps and an elite defense supporting them, the Vikings believe they have the pieces to compete now.

McCarthy showcased a high-variance playstyle in 2025. According toPro Football Focus, McCarthy had the second-best big-time throw percentage (7.3), but also the fifth-worst turnover-worthy play rate (4.8).

Murray, meanwhile, had the second-lowest big-time throw percentage in 2025 (2.3), but the fifth-best turnover-worthy play rate (1.4). His profile and experience show a higher floor, which is what the Vikings need from their quarterback given the supporting cast.

The Vikings finished with a winning record in 2025 despite ranking 30th in EPA per dropback. McCarthy’s poor play in his 10 starts heavily contributed to that.

With good quarterback play, a path to the Super Bowl could emerge for them. Minnesota’s talent on both sides of the ball is too great to ignore.

O’Connell made clear that he wants to keep McCarthy ready to go for whatever moment occurs — whether it be an injury or other factors that could grant him another opportunity as the Vikings’ starting quarterback.

“We’ve learned over the years that we don’t hold the cards,” O’Connell said with Minnesota’s several quarterback injuries in recent seasons. “We need as many guys to be comfortable and ready.

O’Connell’s said that he and general manager Nolan Teasley had this week circled as an approximate time to name their starter.

“We had this timeline, as Nolan and I worked through the summer talking about what we wanted this to look like,” O’Connell said. “Right around now… we would have a good idea of where guys were at and would want to provide clarity, not only for the players involved, but most importantly for our team, our offense, and the direction that we’re going to go so we can really start honing in on exactly what we’re going to be offensively.”

Continuing to get familiar with the scheme, developing chemistry with his coaches and teammates, and the organization circling in on their identity for the upcoming season are the next steps.

“I think he’s shown enough to really project with the right prerequisite of work for a starter leading into a camp that we can get the rhythm, the timing, the mastery of this year’s system,” O’Connell explained. “He’s also proven to be smart, very hard-working, and able to take in a lot of information and churn that out. Now we want to give him the opportunity to really start building a comfort level not only with the system, but with the guys.”

O’Connell said that the clarity at quarterback will also help the Vikings evaluate the rest of their offense more accurately.

With Murray established at the helm, everyone’s roles can start to set in. With the quarterback defined, “Then we can start to hold everybody else accountable to who knows where to go, what to do, and how to do it. That’s where we move forward from here.”

Can Kyler Murray Prove to Be More Than a Scrambler?

Kyler Murray’s defining trait as a quarterback is superstar mobility. His perception revolves around what he can do when the play breaks down. However, he and Kevin O’Connell are focusing on how he manages before the chaos ensues.

Murray has no doubts about his ability to create as-needed, but that’s been an afterthought for him in training camp.

“It’s tough to emulate that stuff on the practice field when bullets aren’t really flying, and there’s no referees out here to be able to say if you were sacked or not,” Murray said. “But when we get out there come game time, that stuff just happens for me.”

Murray’s ability to adapt to O’Connell’s offense, improving his impact from within the pocket, will be vital to the Vikings’ offense having a diverse attack. The balancing act of Murray’s improvisational skills and O’Connell’s structured offense will define both individuals’ reputations moving forward in this pivotal season.
