Following Mark Walter’s sale of a majority stake in the Los Angeles Lakers, the Buss family reportedly agreed to sell their minority stake as well. However, Jeanie Buss isn’t having any of it.

Jeanie Buss has been Governor of the Los Angeles Lakers since 2013, following the passing of her father, Jerry Buss. In 2025, the Buss family sold their controlling share in the Lakers to Mark Walter.

Just a year on, things have changed drastically. Walter has sold his majority share in the franchise to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner at a $12.5 billion valuation.

And on Monday, Shams Charania reported that the Buss siblings were selling their remaining 17.8 percent minority stake to the new owners too. However, Jeanie is not willing to let this happen.

Jeanie Buss’ attorney wrote a letter saying the Buss family’s share cannot be sold without her consent

The NBA world went into a frenzy after the announcement that the new Lakers owners would gain complete control of the franchise.

This would change the most for Jeanie, as no individual can remain a team’s governor if they don’t own at least 15 percent of the franchise. And reports that she is moving to stop it emerged fast.

“We’ve just gotten a letter from Jeanie Buss’s attorney saying that no sale of the remaining 17.8% Buss family shares can be effectuated without the consent of all three of the trustees,” Ramona Shelburne reported.

“That’s Janie Buss, Joey Buss, and Jeanie Buss. Five of the siblings voted to sell this morning. Jeanie Buss did not vote to sell. She’s contending, through her lawyer, that the five siblings who voted to sell do not have the right to do that.”

The situation is getting quite ugly, and if it drags on, could be a huge issue for the new Lakers owners as well as Mark Walter. It seems Jeanie isn’t ready to just give her and her father’s team up that easily.
