The recent deluge that has caused emergency-level flooding put the Lewis Cass’ girls golf team’s season on pause for a bit.
The Lady Kings returned to action for a three-way meet Monday at a water-logged Logansport Golf Club. It was the Kings’ first meet in 11 days as they had three meets canceled last week.
The Kings shot a 213 to finish runner-up to North Miami (201). Wabash had a 221.
“It was pretty wet out there, so we did the best we could, came up a little bit short,” Cass coach Amy Densborn said. “There were some puddles and stuff, so it was free relief obviously with the water. It was a tough night but we got through it.”
Maddy Willis was the medalist on the night for the Kings as the senior shot a 4-over par 40. She had a birdie on the par-five third hole.
“Maddy Willis is a fabulous golfer, fun to watch and she can always manage to play well regardless of the conditions,” Densborn said. “She had a nice birdie and then she got a chip-in. So she was medalist for the night, so I’m really proud of her.”
The Kings have had a good run of girls golfers who have finished their careers strong with standout senior seasons, which includes Kendall Hlebasko going on to play at IUK two years ago and recent two-time regional qualifier Alisha Toops is now a member of the IUK women’s golf team. Willis is making a similar strides as her predecessors.
“Maddy has consistently gotten better. This year she’s lowered her score by five or more strokes so far,” Densborn said. “She played over the summer and she came to summer workouts, so she plays a lot on her own.”
Aaryah Coffman shot a 55 for the Kings. Kate Hull and Alexis Collins each had a 59, and Caroline Wecht added a 69.
PIONEER 214, CLINTON PRAIRIE 260, DELPHI INC.
Pioneer won a three-way meet at Pond View on Monday.
Pioneer’s Kassandra Martinez shot a 50 to earn medalist honors. She was followed by Selena Johnson (51), Grace Cobb (54), Addie Table (59) and Jaelyn Sweet (70). Brilie Long posted a 67 as a JV score for the Panthers.
