The Los Angeles Lakers simply have a need for more talent on both sides of the basketball, though at this stage of the offseason, nearly entering September, there aren't a slew of ways for them to do so. The Lakers will have some opportunities to improve, at least before the trade deadline when the season gets going, but for now, Los Angeles has to hope things go its way.
It remains uncertain how things will play out, but the Lakers definitely have their eyes set on Dallas Mavericks sharpshooter Klay Thompson.
Thompson, who isn't the same player that he once was, would still be a nice addition. He's already played with Luka Doncic, even if it was short-lived, and that showed a lot of promise. While the Lakers have some interest, the Mavericks have yet to decide on his future in Dallas.
“Two sources briefed on the process said this week that it remains unclear how the situation will play out. Dallas currently has 16 standard contracts on its books — one more than the league maximum that will be allowed as of Oct. 19 — but Thompson's fate remained undecided as of Sunday,” Marc Stein wrote.
An ideal scenario for the Lakers would be Thompson getting bought out. The reports continue to indicate that the Mavericks don't really want to do that. It's possible that it could get to that point, but there's no guarantee for Los Angeles.
